I recently purchased a physical copy of the D&D Dungeon Master's Guide at a local bookstore. I was under the impression that there would be some sort of way to obtain a digital version on this sight as well, but I have not yet found out how, if it is at all possible. A guide on how this is done would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately physical books don't have any correlation to access here on dndbeyond. To access the DMG content on dnbeyond, you'll have to buy access to it here on the site. :(
The good news is, there's a promo code right now for 25% off a book, I think it's INVISIBLEWAND, which would make the cost of the book like $22.49!
No problem. One thing I will say is, of all the books, the DMG is probably the least bang for your buck in terms of the character creator. If I had to only buy one book here on dndbeyond, it would be the Player's Handbook, no question!
That's what I've been doing. I picked up the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide when the site first launched. Then I picked up all of the Monsters in the Monster Manual, but haven't unlocked the Compendium Content for it yet. Over Christmas I think they had a sale, and I picked Xanathar's Guide up then. I also have a handful of creatures from Volo's. I'm considering picking up Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Storm King's Thunder with the discount code, but I haven't decided which I'd like yet!
I'm going with The Dungeon Master's Guide, Players Handbook, and Monster Manual, seeing as how they are supposed to be in a group. If anything else, I'll get Volo's guide to monsters, and Xanathar's guide to everything, and maybe the Tortle Package. I'm passing on everything else, at least for now, seeing as how they are just pre made campaigns.
I think that's probably your best move. The better subclasses from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide are in Xanathar's Guide, so you're not missing out on much there. You'll have all of the player stuff for the character creator at that point! Don't forget to pick up Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes when its out too!
Don't forget that you can get stuff piecemeal as well. So what I'd do is buy the PHB, get the race pack for VGtM, and maybe straight up buy XGtE. If you want the stuff from SCAG, can grab what you want from that too. Can help you cut down on cost a bit that way.

Also can you even do that?

Thanks for letting me know right away. I feel pretty stupid for thinking that was a thing. I'm just glad I have what I have.

I thought so too. I've been thinking on just getting them all, little by little.
