Hi there! Long since Ive delved into D&D and are gonna start up a group and homebrew campaign soon! Of course gotta include dragons and gem ones at that. Gem dragons.. I have Fizbans and the Dragons & Treasures books for inspiration.. but then it struck me in my brainstorming. And have to get it off my shoulders
Why so little on gem dragons? Theres untapped potential there with win-wins. Be it minis, sourcebooks ( and expansion appendix books for left out material ), adventure books around gem dragons, noveks revolving them etc
I might be very wrong so please correct me. But It seems WotC sure love to introduce stuff like with Fizbans Treasury of Dragons. But they are ACHINGLY neglecting, ignoring or bide their time to:
NOTE! I would LOVE some reassurance and insights, some hope from anyone here that might have contacts at WotC or are reading these forums. Highly appreciated! I love gem dragons and their 5e14/5e24 abscence is driving my OCD mad
1: Set in stone in say PHB 24 Gem dragonborn options with their gem elemental types
And to update Draconic Bloodline.. now Sorcery with Gem elemental types. Its IRRELEVANT if those or " op " to the Chromatic and Metallic elements. Its better to have them officialy safe and sound printed in an official sourcebooks, so if its an issue. DMs can adjust accordingly
It will be such a travesty and a huge disappointment not to at least deepen and broaden the attention Gem dragons deserve as the third major true dragon family! Wouldnt mind. An extra 5 set of true dragons of lesser known dragons for the Chromatic, Gem and Metallic true deagon families
3: Anyone knoe WHEN we will finally get to buy the Adult Amethyst dragon from WizKids!? Any smidge of info. Also keeping the SAME sizing as with all the other dragons in the Icons Adult dragon line of minis? The Amethyst one is the only one besides a Sardior ruby mini, we miss! Need our collection complete. And Im ready to splurge for 3 of them. 1 fir use, 1 for gift for my one twin sibling that LOVES purple and 1 for my... hoard
3: Lack of adventures involving Gem dragons. I do love the meager snippets from Dragons and Treasures young adventurer book
4: I got the explanation of the brilliant orange Topaz dragons backwards wings. Due to being adept at both swimming and flying aand being from the Negative plane. Though... my OCD screams a redesign and have them be tge correct way. Their necrotic breath weapon, grumpiness and fascination of life and death is more than enough distinctive " Negative plane " than to misalign such splendid topaz wings
5: Another thing regarding D&D minis... Total lack of Gem dragonborn player minis and in translucent plastic. Also just a odd move not to manufacture any promo minis and sell them in booster series and packs later. Eorldwide. There is the 700+$ Fizbans Treasury booster Collectors pack. But for me in Scandinavia its absolutely impossible to order it privately or through dedicated D&D/ RPG online store in my nation. And no I dont order from sites outside the Nordics due to safety.
Thats all. Thanks for reading through and appreciate answers
Someone who pays more attention to news than me can verify this, but I think it was said that the books released before the 2024 Core Rulebooks were designed with the updated rules in mind, so the dragons in Fizban's should work with any kind of gaming you'd want to do with them!
Historically, though, I don't know a whole lot about gem dragons. Fizban's was really my first exposure to a third classification of D&D dragon, so I wouldn't be very helpful there, I'm afraid ^^;

Gem dragons are awesome, and I would love to see them getting more attention. 'Overpowered' characters or classes don't matter, FUN characters and classes are important. For a campaign idea, if you're interested, (you said you were homebrewing a campaign) maybe draw on some of the lore of the First World. That stuff's really cool.

Pokemon Master, Hero of Hyrule, Jedi Knight, Minecrafter, Celestial Being Beyond Comprehension, Bounty Hunter, Salmon Runner, Nailmaster, Yarn Yoshi Enjoyer, Animal Lover, Math Rock Roller, Nerd King in all Aspects.
(And, of course, Dragon Tamer. It is in the name, after all)
Gem dragons are indeed awesome. I have scenario in mind where players will meet coastal yellow, topaz and bronze dragons having a territorial feud and they will be able to choose to help one, two or all of them in some way to settle it😂
Yeah I heard murmurs about the compability stuff and that we can homebrew. It just baffles me seemingly obvious updates should alredy have been set in stone... ink alredy in Fizbans and PHB24
