I just bought 4 digital books here on D&DB... Does that mean I will have to 1) purchase the new version (One D&D) digital books? 2) Pay full price for what I understand to be merely revisions placed on top of what I already paid for?
I mean, if you want the revisions - and undoubtedly other things they include to make the books attractive purchases - then yes, you will have to pay for it. We're not at the point of RBaaS, yet. But I promise you they're busy wondering how to make that happen.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

What do you mean?
Your adventures will still work. If you bought CoS, you will still be able to play it afterwards. The rulebooks? Well, if DDB will still let you use them hasn't been clarified but I imagine that they will be yes. You won't get the new rulebooks without paying for them, I'm like 95% sure on that.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
There's a small possibility, but very doubtful. More likely, they'll just label it legacy and move on. Bear in mind that many have payed money for 5e.nit 1D&D,.they won't be happy if their product is switched out from beneath their feet. We've had this furore in the forum before.
I just feel that what I have only just purchased is about to be redundant in a year.
It won't be redundant. You may prefer the new version, but it's not redundant. 5e should still work and be compatible with new adventures (to my understanding). You aren't losing out by having 1D&D released. Which isn't to say that your concerns are invalid, but this isn't like buying the WiiU only to have the Switch be announced a week later. It's more like having the Switch, then having a Switch Pro announced.
Maybe i am misunderstanding something, but I feel like I just wasted money when I should have just waited a year to get into DnD.
If you got your stuff from DDB very recently, shoot customer service an email and explain. They might refund you or give you a voucher for 1D&D or something. You never know. Not to be callous though, I do understand the frustration, but 5e is 8 years old now and it was always going to be a risk - and the problem is much worse than I expected when I got into it last year. I expected a completely incompatible version to be coming, like 5e is to 4e, etc. Especially since the new version was announced a while ago now.

Rule book as a service, I.e a subscription service to access the materials instead of buying the books outright.
That is something no one implied yet. Is that your worst nightmare?
I implied that. And yes.
Actually, that would be fine it the price was sane and fair - if so, it would be ideal.

Then they would invalidate printed books more or less completely, don't believe this is going to happen.
I disagree. What most /should / would want are options...
In my case...I'd like the ability that when I buy a hard copy, I get a complimentary digital copy that I can add to my online account. Sometimes I want the physical book in my hands and sometimes I want the digital.. (Mostly for copying and pasting state blocks into Foundry or Roll20 to make prepping go faster)...
BUT... they should do the same thing that MMOs like ESO does... if you sub, you get access to it all and can use it in games for ease of use. Permitted you stay subbed, for the moment you are not.. it all goes away.

Enjoy your slop. I'll be enjoying good products elsewhere.
I can say this. If DDB releases new books and changes the rules in meaningful ways they have 2 great options to consider among the others I am sure they are considering.
1. They will charge for all new sets of core books and expansions. This will have mixed signals for the fans. Some will not be up for dropping another couple of hundred dollars on the new game so will continue to run the old game with no problem, while newer people will buy into the new stuff and hopefully have backwards compatibility.
2. This is an excellent opportunity to give more value to monthly subscriptions. I currently have the basic subscription but I am unsure how much longer I will want it as it offers very basic content. However, if the subscription went up a few dollars and it allowed my original digital purchases to use newer content (forward/backward compatibility), then you just supersized the value of the subscription fee. Just an idea.
I look forward either way to what the company decides. The concepts and content so far have kept me buying more content.

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!
Thanks for the replies all! And the further comments about the update.
I guess if I am just not going to buy all new stuff outright so soon after purchasing these 5e ones, then I can just keep playing 5e games until a time where I might feel like moving up to 1D&D.
Have they confirmed that the source/rule books will be compatible after the release of 1D&D? And not just the adventures.
That would be an absolute deal breaker for me. I would instantly quit if I was essentially forced to buy the new PHB in order to continue.
In my case...I'd like the ability that when I buy a hard copy, I get a complimentary digital copy
Oh Lordy, not this again.
Why is it that some people expect content provided in a different format/platform to be free? If I buy a book, I don't automatically expect a free version for my e-reader. If I buy a game for my Playstation, I don't expect a free copy for my PC. WoTC are not going to write off a significant income stream by making digital content free for people who buy books. However, they have stated that the Dragonlance bundle will be a "test and learn" to see how they can bundle the 2 together and what kind of price point to use.
But you will always pay at least some cost for both versions. Seems reasonable.

It's almost like WotC is a business or something. Weird. Couldn't agree more.

What does RBaaS mean?
So will a new players handbook be released?
Or will the revisions be a digital book itself?
I just feel that what I have only just purchased is about to be redundant in a year. I am speaking mainly of PHB, TCoE and XGtE
Yes they will still work, and yes I can still play 5e DnD... but a lot (most?) people will want to be playing CURRENT D&D. Not the old version.
Maybe i am misunderstanding something, but I feel like I just wasted money when I should have just waited a year to get into DnD.
No clue.

There will be a new PHB in 2024 with all the new changes, and it will be physical and digital.
XGtE and TCoE will be compatible with the new PHB (within boarders is my guess).
