Cosmetics (typically) come in sets that are themed around a book, but can (typically) only be unlocked by pre-ordering. At this point, you cannot even see the detailed content listing on the marketplace page. (Typically) there is no way to get that content after pre-ordering is closed. Artists and programmers spend time to create, integrate, and maintain those cosmetic features and D&D Beyond generates $0 from it after pre-ordering closes.
What are you sentiments regarding character sheet cosmetics?
I never pre-order from DDB, period. In part because I almost never need a whole book. I'm pretty sure, also, that the current $1.99 for the a la carte purchases is the minimum they can charge. So the $1 option is out. If I were to ever shell out money for the cosmetic features, I'd want it to be a mix-and-match type thing, so you can grab 2 frames and a background, or 5 frames, or something to that effect. The only thing I could see having a different cost would be the animated frames, maybe, so if the mix-and-match was 'pick any 5 from these categories,' animated frames are double, so you could get 2 animated frames and a still frame, or 2 animated frames and a color scheme.
I'd actually much rather have a separate subscription option or something that lets me upload an image myself, but I don't see that happening.
I know I posted a topic about this a while back, I primarily use DDB as a player and my wonderful DM shares his purchases for our gaming table, so my motivation for buying sourcebooks is quite low. However, in saying that, I would happily throw some money DDBs way for access to new cosmetics for the character sheet. Get some seasonal stuff in there, the dice sets are cool and all, but I've been tinkering with an warlock that uses mostly frost/cold damage, so something that isn't the standard warlock background image would be neat, and I'd throw a couple dollars at a nice wintery lookin snowfield or something for him.
I adore the cosmetics, and almost all of my sourcebook purchases have been more or less entirely for the cosmetics with the book's content just an added bonus. I would absolutely kill to have sheet cosmetics DISPLAYED so we could see what we're getting, and able to be purchased separately. Even just like... "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - Cosmetics Only Pack" with all of the borders, frames, and backgrounds that came with those preorders, for like $10-$15. I would buy those religiously.
The new book just announced for preorders seems alright, but doesn't have anything that particularly sparks my interest. And yet I'm probably gonna end up preordering on the off chance it has cosmetics I'd like. Which is wild but also I would really appreciate seeing what I'd be getting for those assets before I buy, because $30 is a lot for Russian roulette with like 6 portrait frames.
I generally always pre-order, just cause if I have the money ahead of time, why not? In the early days, I was excited about the cosmetic items. Now... meh... it is what it is. There are a couple of cool ones, but the frames don't really match any of the designs and the colors of the themes don't quite match the frames... and if I can't get it to all work together, then I just go back to the basics. I think the last character that had "fancy stuff" was Zhen who had the Animated Orrery... but he perma-died in 2018... and I haven't really had any of them fit since then. As for all of the fancy things, I think I have them all... and the most useful is the border Themes where you have a wide variety of colors to choose from. I guess my aesthetic is different than a lot of people. I am older than your typical D&D player and I do a lot of graphic design for websites and photography and I find many of the backgrounds to be too distracting or have odd details in strange places in certain monitor size settings. I keep hoping though... I try out most of them... and month by month, year by year, I'll keep adding to the bricks of my legendary bundle hoping to find that perfect trifecta of frame, theme and background. I'll let you know when I find it for one of mine...
It kills me that you can't see the cosmetics before deciding to purchase. I really wish they would just offer them afterwords as a separate bundle, they can even jack up the price if they want to encourage pre-orders which include them for "free".
I agree that a $1 option isn't realistic. I included it as an option just to see if the interest was there at least.
I don't think a mix-and-match option is realistic. Implementation would be complex and incongruous with all of their other item sales. I think item, set, and bundle are the levels that have a chance of implementation. That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to a "select items like normal, receive a discount scaling with quantity" option, and they do plenty of discounts so maybe they could implement that.
I've never heard of these cosmetics. How can I buy it, and for whom are your cosmetics preferred? I recently finished http://www.nwcollege.edu, and now I work in a beauty salon, and I'm looking for new interesting cosmetics for my clients. Please tell us more about these cosmetics. Maybe I should buy some of your face masks and creams or recommend them to customers. In general, it would be nice to get a complete overview of the products of your cosmetology company.
You get free cosmetic stuff (normally frames for your character sheets, dice and stuff like that) if you pre-order a book. Usually they'll be themed around whatever it is that you've pre-ordered.
I don't believe it's possible to get them separately. If you don't pre-order, you don't get them.
