Hi! Though this account is fairly new, I have been on D&D beyond since long before it was officially WoCT, and have been playing the game much longer. Though I do not publish my home brews myself, I still thought that the new OGL is outrageous. But, I don't know what to think of the NEW new OGL, so I'm just wanting opinions. BTW, feel free to fume.

There’s lots of angry people out there, but the simple reality is that we are at a “wait and see” moment. Today’s announcement effectively provided insight into what the draft document was - basically saying “our lawyers went to the bargaining table with something super aggressive as an opening position, as lawyers often do, and we’re sorry we didn’t do more to tell them to calm down” - and making it clear that they were making key concessions on everything players have been asking for:
1. Rights conferred to things beyond simple writings;
2. No royalties for content;
3. Removing some legalese about licensing folks found problematic;
4. Protecting the OGL 1.0 rights already existing.
It would be really, really financially dumb for them to walk back those things - which means corporate greed is likely going to hold them accountable to the above concessions. So, until we have a final document, even if the angry folks don’t trust Wizards, they should trust Wizards to be greedy (which they’ve been calling Wizards for days now) and that should be enough to at least change the current mood to “okay, now let’s see what the actual terms are.”
Of course, critical reading and analysis is much harder than simply raging, and common sense and basic language comprehension often cannot overcome the inertia of animosity that exists online.
^ The big thing they have yet to comment on that could still be a dealbreaker (at least for me) is the unilateral change with only 30 days notice clause. Hopefully that gets the axe, or at least a hefty revision, as well.
The problem with trusting them until we know the actual terms is that we were not supposed to know the actual terms. They send this out with a very short deadline to sign and covered under existing NDAs. They never intended to make it public, at least until they had already strong armed the community. So trust them? No. Be quiet? No. Until they show me that they are willing to take actual responsibility for awful business practices, they change the leadership that pushed this, and they apologize in an honest way, I'm not trusting them or piping down.
From my understanding of the article, Wizards of the Coast has two main things that they intend for Open Game License 1.1 to do.
They want to make it clear that the D&D Open Game License is for D&D, not for NFTs or blockchain games.
They want to stop bigoted people from spreading hate with a Wizards' Creator Badge on their work.
Both of these terms are quite reasonable. D&D should not be a game that tolerates racism and hate, and it is important to make sure that their legal contracts to the fans do not allow that. The other clause also makes sense; The Open Game License should be for ttrpg players expanding the game, it shouldn't be about making NFTs and profiting off other peoples intellectual properties.

If you've been on D&D Beyond for a long time, you would know there are a lot of threads on this.

A LOT OF THREADS ON THIS.
This is true. But why not set up one of my own and add to the chaos! :)

You realize that the current version of the OGL protects IP, right? The reason that no one can use Mindflayers and Beholders but WotC is because thats 'Product Identity' that they specifically reserved?
No one has made money 'profiting' off of Wizards IP - they've made money making products compatible with Dungeons and Dragons, using rules that were made available for people to use but which are not actually copyrightable , and in doing so increased the value of Wizards IP?
This entire line of reasoning is bogus. People making money via the OGL have done it via their own work.

Unfortunately the response from WOTC fell far, far short of the mea culpa that they needed to regain the love and trust of the community. At this point I think they're done. I fully expect one of the new offshoot RPG's to assume the dominate position in the hobby within the next two years.

Lol you believe them when they say it's just a draft
Based on cnbc article, it appears everything about the leak was accurate. WoTC definitely overreached and time will tell if they fix it with the updated OGL. At least all the speculation over the terms has been confirmed to be accurate with the leak. I hope WoTC learns from this cluster and drafts a better OGL going forward.

You'll be waiting/yelling a long time if these are the demands. They believe #1 and #3 are taken care of, and #2 won't happen unless there is a huge drop in revenue/share price (unlikely, even with this rage).

CNBC report of the D&D OGL: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/13/hasbro-delays-new-dungeons-dragons-licensing-rules.html
Wotc corporate has most certainly rolled a Nat 1 on PR performace check.
The new game license will decide the saving throw DC if the community finds it still to be overreaching.
