Is there a rule somewhere that specifically states not allowing that. Because I've allowed Legacy content to allow for 2014 subclasses that haven't seen updates, I had a player try to multiclass twice into Fighter Core and Fighter Legacy to double up their subclasses.
I had to tell them no.

Long time player and DM since 1992. I have played and run various, numerous games, many of them Table Top over the years.
They are effectively the same class, just with slightly updated rules. Just as you can't multi-class two versions of the same class to get access to two of the sub-classes, the game doesn't have rules for mixing and matching base-classes between rules updates. You are, of course, welcome to kit-bash the two however you like and offer that to your player, as is your DM's right. Or don't, which is also a valid option.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
The PHB definitely says you can't, but I'd be half-tempted to let them. Since two copies of the same ability don't get you anything more than one, they're spending precious levels to get very little.
Whether or not D&D Beyond's software reflects it, the rules on playing with 2014 content in a 2024 game do not allow this. The updated fighter replaces the 2014 fighter. They do not both exist in the same game.

What page has that rule?
Couldn't find it in a quick-through of the Free Rules but it's been an oft-repeated thing from Crawford in interviews about 5.5 that if something with the same name appears with both 5.0 and 5.5 versions that you then use the 5.5 version as it replaces the 5.0 version.
So for a 5.5 character the 5.5 fighter class (same name) replaces the 5.0 fighter class.

You are allowed to tell your players no.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

You can absolutely do it in the software...

This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.
