I'm a late adopter of D&D Beyond. I have in the past relied on campaign books, character sheets and physical books. Mostly because I know I have them as long as they are taken care of.
5E will probably be my last edition. We really like it and are probably going to make this our one edition to rule them all.
What promises/guarantees are that the material will be here in say 2026 or 2032? Through a 6th or 7th edition? I buy digital stuff on Amazon, but being as it's a massive enterprise I don't expect that it will be taken down or lose license rights.
Just trying to gain some confidence in the permanence of the product before investing.
as with most digital products, there's no promise or guarantee.
That said - D&D Beyond is created and run by Curse, who are part of Twitch Interactive. Twitch is in turn owned by Amazon. That means there is plenty of corporate/enterprise level backing for this product.
The design team at Wizards of the Coast have said several times that they are many years off 6th edition and, when they finally do create 6th edition, it will be due to community demand and they want it to be backwards compatible with 5th edition, so none of the 5th edition books would be invalidated.
I expect D&D Beyond to do similar, so whilst this isn't an official answer - I expect that as long as there is demand for this site, it will continue going.
I thought about it as well, but decided to dive in whole hearted. So my purchase plan is as follows I will buy the rules and adventures here on DDB, but I also order a Dead Tree version from Amazon on the rules only. With the rulebooks my adventures can be homemade, and most of the adventures do not have alot of rules in them to expand the game.
