Coming back to D&D after 30 years, I know I have a LOT to catch up on! I have been plowing through each 5E book I can grab, and watching lots of variations on streamed D&D sessions, including D&Ds new official streaming session, Encounter Party, which is great!
On an episode of Season 1 of Critical Roll, I saw Matt receive a "DM's Cloak" and I have been suggested many YouTube videos for making a DM Cloak, yet, I don't know what a DM's Cloak is, or why it is a 'thing'.
Was there something specific in the past that happened and DMs all started wearing Cloaks at some point? Was it a trend that died off?
Just curious as I try to catch up.
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Because they don't play one character, and their role in the world is sort of god-like and shrouded in mystery, cloaks have become the popular way to depict DMs in group images instead of having one regular person in the middle of a bunch of fantasy characters
I think it is related to masks terribly comfortable and everyone will be wearing them in the future although a cloak has the added ability to keep you warm and if you have a hood it might make one look mysterious. combine it with a mask and you could Bandit .
In all seriousness it might just be Matt's Schtick

It's mostly this guy's fault:
If a DM doesn't wear the bald cap, I walk away at session 0.
DM mostly, Player occasionally | Session 0 form | He/Him/They/Them

If the DM doesn't show up riding this I am not playing.

You are not missing anything. DM cloaks are not a thing.
No idea what it is as a DM myself but it sounds cool so ill buy one
What if they're naturally bald, does it still count?

I personally wear one of those scramble suits from PKD's A Scanner Darkly, but I got more sci-fi that D&D under my GM hours logged.
Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
