I know i need the players handbook to unlock a bunch of the character creation stuff but do I need the 2014 handbook or will preordering the 2024 handbook unlock the same content? =/
If you plan to play in a campaign with someone as the DM here on DNDBeyond they may be able to share their PHB and other products' access depending on their subscription level.

Some character content is free. Here is a link to the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules ( everything in the basic rules, you get to use for free- it contains some character creations stuff and at least the lions share of the rules and information that you need to play ) and here is where you can build a character using what is in the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder. ( Also what Allurian219 said: consider asking your DM if they are set up to share content on dndbeyond or if they know someone who is who might help you out). I'm not sure that I would buy the 2014 Players Handbook, if it were not being offered on sale at a really good discount, unless you just really want to do that. IMO the full version doesn't have that much more than the basic rules has (that's where I would start, if had it to do over) and right now with the new edition coming out: everything feels like it's kind of in flux.

If you want the current information you need the 2014 PHB. You'll get it now.
If you want the new stuff you can pre-order the 2024 PHB and you'll get access to it in Sept.
