I'm sure this has already been addressed somewhere on the boards, but I have a lvl 17 half-orc barbarian in a current campaign. One D&D has gotten rid of any half species. How is that going to affect the already created character? Do I have to rebuild them from lvl 1? I plan on downloading a copy of the current character sheet, but I also have 83 characters created and I don't want to that for all of them. Has there been any updates on this?
One D&D is the name of the initiative for "the VTT, Updates to DnDB, Rules Update testing, and more..." the new players handbook and rules change is "the 2024 players handbook" aka 5.5/5.24 depending on circle. Sorry bugs me to see One DnD being used at this point, the UA is over.
As for how, according the the released content, you will make an Orc and then apply some human background bits on to them. It's not a lovely situation IMO (mostly because I'm a Half IRL and I'm an even split of both my moms Middle Eastern Jewish traits and my fathers Nodic traits.)
Apparently to do this you can't pick human and apply non-human traits. But that is hearsay at the moment. Honestly all the youtubers are deep diving everything but this aspect of the new book.

From the changelog current races, including the half-elf and half-orc, from the PHB will be marked as legacy but still usable in the character creator.
I'm not sure how the half-elf's +2/+1/+1 will be handled though considering they're changing a lot of stuff to run on 5.5 rules instead of 5.0 rules so you might need to homebrew an item to get the extra +1 from a half-elf's racials.

There's really no method to bring in Half species. You would have to chose something like Human and give it some Orc features and call it a half orc.

Everything I have heard, and everything said so far, this is false. 1st if you purchased the older material, than you can use any of the Legacy Species with the new rules, this includes the old Half-Orc and Half-Elves. But if you are making new, with only the 5.24 material than you can make a character of one species and apply traits from another, which is exactly how p2e handles this. I personally think with Half-Orcs this is fine, since if you read the lore of the setting, all Green/Mountain Orcs are half-orcs and the only full blooded orcs in Forgotten Realms are the Grey Orcs. Sadly though, I think this fails to capture half-elves properly but that is because they should be a unique species much like the Bretons from Elder Scrolls. Who are halves descended from the mixing of Mer and Men. There are entire regions in Forgotten Realms where everyone is half-elf. Some suggestion "Cha'Tel'Quessir" or maybe based on the region Aglarond so "Aglarondian"
Frankly, if I were to allow mixNmatch for half race, I would just say "ok you can choose 1 trait from Race A, one trait from Race B, any traits but that's it, you don't get more". So you can be a Half Human Half Orc if you want with Versatile and Adrenaline Rush, but you lose everything else. The power to freely compose comes with the trade of losing several traits.
Maybe you also get a free +1 to one ability score, as a throwback to Half-Elf getting +2 +1 +1 currently (and might be needed power wise, not sure). I know they don't want ability score on racial anymore but it's an option open to any race mixing so it should be less problematic https://omegle****/ .

Well I don't know what you heard or who you heard it from. I have a copy of the PHB, and in nowhere does it give you any options for converting over any PC Species: half or otherwise. They do for Classes, but none for Species. The suggestion that I gave you was from the UA Origins, which was the ONLY conversion method they gave for Half Species.
