Hi welcome to the hobby! Anything in particular you wanted help with or is it just all feeling like a lot? You’ve made a good choice as a first character, Barbarians are nice a straight forward class while still feeling like you’re pulling your weight as a party member. Best advice I can give is keep it simple and read your class abilities so you know what you can do (you’d be amazed how many players don’t even do this simple thing) and as for role playing you don’t have to have a special voice or a particular personality if you don’t want to, playing a character can be as simple as “my character does X”, but don’t be afraid to try all that if you feel comfortable
I would also encourage you to make a character that works with the party. It is a common theme that sometimes, new players default to making the loner type of character. This is a collaborative game. You can still make that loner type if that makes you comfortable, but this character should have a unmovable, solid reason that they would want to stay with the party and even depends on them.
Where are you stuck? Are you still making your character? Is it live play in person? Online? Play by post? Have you asked your DM about your questions?
We can help a lot more if you have specific questions that we can answer. Even if it's a lot of them, or if more pop up as we got, that's not a problem.
Just started playing. Made my character, don't have a DM and right now its online. I'm stuck on my background/backstory. I have been looking for live play in my area but it is kind of hard. I don't get out much it will most likely be online.
I recommend you check out your local game shop. The several in my area have together at least a dozen games. If you are more comfortable online, then I recommend you check out D&D's Discord or check out this forum. Maybe both.
While it is certainly common for new players to want to dive right into character creation before actually finding a game, understand that you may not actually end up playing that exact character. Not having a backstory is probably a good thing at this point, unless you simply want to practice with the tools. It could be that your character's backstory simply doesn't work in the world the DM is using and you'd have to rewrite it anyway.
It's probably better to wait until you have a group to play with to create a character that you are going to latch on to and really want to play. Play around and check things out, for sure, but don't get too attached at this point.
That said, I'll echo Erik and say, head to your local game store and ask the staff if there are any DnD games going on and that you're interested in joining. DMs and other players will be your primary resource for answering questions as they will have knowledge of setting and style. If in-person is out of the question, then there are online options, but you will be in the same boat as far as characters created out of campaign.
I created the character mainly to play a little on my own to get use to a character. I understand that it may not work with the world the DM is using. My local game stores are few and far between. we do have anew one coming this summer. Beyond excited for that. Of course it would be up to the DM how to proceed.
The other good place to ask if you don't have local game stores is nearby libraries. A lot of them run clubs themselves but if they don't they also tend to hear about local clubs or societies so might be able to point you in the right direction
