When will the digital character sheet be updated to fully include the 2024 rules? You cannot do custom backgrounds using the new rules and when you take long rests it is still using the old rules restoring only half your hit die.
You cannot do custom backgrounds using the new rules
You can, it just requires using the homebrew tools as custom backgrounds have been moved from a player facing option to a DM facing homebrew option. The character builder correctly reflects this change
So as a player I have to talk my DM into going into the homebrew section and creating my specialized background as a new background for their campaign and then create my character in that campaign in order to get a custom background? That sucks.

No-one said that
If your DM okays a homebrew background you can make it using the homebrew tools
Maybe you misread my post, I said how you can make custom backgrounds and then I explained why they're now made that way for 2024 rules—you use the homebrew tools because it's now a DM facing homebrew option
Thank you for clarifying. I was aware that I can use the homebrew functions as both a player and a DM but your sounded to me as if the extended play was I I stated. Not just get DM approval them create on your own.
custom backgrounds in the sheet are for the old rules not for 2024. if the DM allows custom backgrounds, t5hey should be able to do it just like they did before, not by creating a homebrew creation. it is not intuitive to do it that way. they could make it an option just like they did with the original version. but that is only one of the issues.

2014 player facing custom backgrounds are fully supported and have been for years. 2024 custom backgrounds as a DM facing homebrew option are supported via the homebrew tools.

I think they're asking for it to become player-facing from a game design PoV.
Which isn't within DNDBeyond's scope of effect.

I at least get that 2014 custome background is player facing and always has been - ie I can create it within the 2014 rules in the character creator. What I (we?) were hoping for was that the same would be true for the 2024 custom backgrounds not that we had to go over to homebrew system and create it there then selecting in the PC generator.. that is a single step not a two step. Doing it two step is workable but not ideal. At this point what I would really like is to understand the decision matrix that led to doing it this way. I know it’s not a coding problem because I could have coded it in less than a day back in the days when I was doing coding (70’s- fortan 4, 80’s - basic, 90’s - html, SPSS, Perl).

Excatly. I dont understand why they cant figure it out after i explained it twice.

Because you explained this POV twice poorly in the wrong place. What you're discussing has nothing to do with the "D&D Beyond character sheet" and everything to do with how D&D itself is designed.
I am asking when it will BE PART OF THE CHARACTER SHEET AND CHARACTER CREATION SYSTEM NOT PART OF HOMEBREWLIKE IT IS FOR 2014 RULES!
When it becomes part of the 2024 rules to do it that way.
The digital character sheet is aligned with 2024 rules regarding custom backgrounds. The official 2024 rulings on custom background is: if you need a custom background, ask your DM to make it. The DM, if agreeable, makes the homebrew for you to use. This is why the "custom background" section is in the Dungeon Master's Guide, not the Player's Handbook.

D&D Beyond doesn't limit homebrew creation to DMs

Agreed, having to use homebrew to do it isn’t exactly intuitive or user friendly even if it does sort of work.
