Who is over the moon about the next book? Planar and multiverse stuff woo hoo! Can't wait to get this one. I love the model they have developed for content with not just new mechanical stuff but storytelling flavor, tips and suggestions too.
I'm especially interested to see how the book is obtained by players. Will we see a big shift into the digital realm here through DDB? I plan to get both the physical copy and digital here but if I'm honest, my physical books are becoming more a habit for me. I love the tools here and use this way more.
If you missed some of the details about the Tome of Foes we've got some info over at Nerdarchy too.
I'll be getting it on DDB and from my FLGS -- I like a full shelf, but also I tend to lend out my books. If I was just buying for me I might be tempted to just pick DDB, honestly, I'm getting more and more enamoured with this place.
I'm pretty excited about the new book, the deep-dive into some races sounds absolutely up my alley.
D&D Beyond released a video giving out more information today for those interested:
Though I will say I am still most excited about getting more demons and devils to summon. And with us getting higher CR monsters in this upcoming release, that means our fiendish armies will be even stronger. Mwahahaha!
There were some great new details revealed in the D&D stream earlier tonight. Personally I'm really happy to definitely have the eladrin, especially with extra lore and the ability to make them count as full fey all confirmed. I'm also really curious to see how the shadow elves turn out.
Most of what occurred in the Dragon Talk was to be expected, especially considering what we previously knew from the D&D Beyond video as well as all the speculation drummed up from recent UA articles. But what I didn't see coming (especially after the exclusion of the Wonder Maker feat in XGtE) was the love shown toward gnomish invention. As we're not only getting crazy gnome inventions (Crawfords words) but also clockwork creatures to play around with, which is great to hear!
Oh look, a Drow with two scimitars. Never seen one of those before.
I kid, I kid. I've already pre-ordered, of course. Glad to finally have something to use that Critical Role discount code on!
Exactly! Legendary bundle discount plus coupon code made this purchase very easy. :)
Exactly! With DDB's already discounted price, Legendary Bundle discount, and CR coupon, I almost felt bad for how much I paid.
Almost. :)
But, considering how much this book is sounding like something I will really like, I might pick it up in hardcover as well. Or at the very least, DDB has me as a committed customer for as long as they are around! For example, my kids had a snow day and by the time I got home, they had characters rolled up (including a couple homebrew races) ready for a new campaign we started tonight.
I like the shadar-kai becoming elves - in fact, I always assumed they were shadowfell elves until I saw their artwork. But the retcon to the Raven Queen I do not like. Its equivalent to taking Thor and turning him into a love god in D&D cannon but then saying to the DM's "but you can do what you like".
Sorry, it irks me and I had to get it off my chest :)
I realize this thread is a little old now, but having just recently joined, I wanted to share my thoughts.
I bought MToF when it came out, mainly for the chapter on elves and drow. I have to admit I was…disappointed. I know the book isn’t setting-specific, and I am most familiar with Forgotten Realms, but it seemed like they were trying to give the elves from all the settings the same origin story, removing some unique history (though I like that they kept the elves being born from Corellon’s blood, something that has been consistent in FR lore for a while).
As a deity and cosmology fan, what really bothered me was the fate of the souls. Elves being reincarnated isn’t a completed reversal of previous lore, as they did believe in it, being creatures of the natural world. However, Arvandor was always treated as a reward, and not all elves were reincarnated. Some remained eternally in Arvandor. But now, it’s treated as a “vacation home”, where the elves spend a period of time before they are reincarnated, being denied permanent status in Arvandor because Corellon is angry at their ancestors. It’s enough of a change that it didn’t entirely sit well with me (yes, I am one of those people who cares about canon. I can pick and choose what I want, but I still don’t like when the official lore—or whatever you want to call it—is messed with to such an extent). Those who don’t worship the Seldarine are denied access to Arvandor…okay, makes sense, but it’s vague on their fate. One can assume they go to the realm of the deity they did worship, as it has been in the past. I get “DM freedom”, but I don’t like it when things are so vague, because it then just sounds like the creators didn’t want to bother planning it out. Or maybe I’m just a stickler lol.
And the drow…the changes there really bothered me. I don’t mind them getting rid of the Descent, but the fact that their souls just disappear…so they don’t even go to Lolth? Why? Are drow being treated as so evil now that they don’t even have souls? Eilistraeen souls are said to be bathed in moonlight before they disappear, so one can assume they are taken in by the Dark Maiden, but still…why the change and vagueness? All the past editions have outlined it, and MToF goes against some lore from even the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. Again, I realize it isn’t FR-specific, but it goes back to lumping all the lore together.
They totally changed Vhaeraun too. Sorry, just a lot things didn’t sit well with me. I had to get to let it out. I realize that was a bit of a long rant ^^;

Helpful vid by Todd and Mike. Not being really familiar with D&D lore this will be a really valuable addition to my library.
