I'm playing a fire genasi monk who grew up in a monastary that was mostly staffed by the dragonborn clan in the area. Bahamut was obviously one of the gods of that temple (even though it wasn't originally built to bahamut) and if my character later on wanted to multiclass a cleric might be a choice for her and Bahamut seems like the most likely deity. Here is my question... And more I would just like discussion on it since I know it really come down to DM law. But, if my monk who is currently you neutral good were to crossclass with cleric my DM thinks she'd/I'd have to change her alignment to lawful good.
I mean I understand that yeah to be a cleric You have laws and traditions in your temple/order you have to follow... And I know bahamut is a god of good and justice and protection blah blah... But really Lawful Good?
5E doesn't have alignment restrictions for classes. If the DM wants to put in certain restrictions or requirements that must be met for multiclassing that is up to them. Alignments are more of a moral outlook for your character, to help guide you in roleplaying.
Yes deities have alignments that alot of there followers and servants follow, but not every faithful of Bahamut is going to be lawful good.
I play a trickery domain cleric that is lawful neutral, I play him as the parties deal maker/ contract writer. He'll never willingly break a contract, but you can make darn sure you'll always come out second best and thank you for the opportunity of securing the parties services.

Even in 3e, Clerics only had to be within an alignment step away from their deity. Requiring a shift from NG to LG doesn't make sense.
