Hey All, just wondering does anyone know after you pre-order one of the new books on dndbeyond, how long til you gain access to the character unlocks (character frames, portraits, backdrops, and theme)?
You receive them when the book itself unlocks on D&D Beyond.
The portraits, character frames, backdrops & theme colors unlock when the pre-ordered product goes live.
It is likely that these cosmetics will be made available somehow to all users at a point in the future.
By pre-ordering, you gain these cosmetics on release of the product - it is likely to be at least a year before it is possible to gain them otherwise, so you are gaining access at least a year before it is otherwise possible.
As explained in the other thread on this - the artwork used to create these pre-order bonuses isn't available yet, so there's no way to make them for you now.
When Curse receive the completed book from Wizards of the Coast, they'll start work on entering it into D&D Beyond (the highest priority) and then, once that is done, the themes/backdrops will be created from the artwork.
I agree that the wording could be more specific about when you'll receive these bonuses, but I'm not sure how it's misleading.
You get early access to the themes and such because if you don't preorder the book, you currently have no way of getting the themes (et al). They have discussed offering them for sale in the future, which means you're getting them (a) early and (b) free as a bonus for preordering. As long as you get the themes and such before they go on sale (which is currently not even a thing), that's early access...

This is all correct, but it's also not an argument against it being misleading. I agree with Stormknightthat it could be written better, but it is misleading. Any reasonable person is going to see that statement quoted above by Whirlmeister and make the obvious assumption that the early access content would be made available prior to product release. Reasonable and obvious because there's no language to suggest any different from how it almost always works. The assumption is incorrect, and the actual case makes the statement still technically true. But being misleading doesn't mean being factually incorrect, it just means giving the wrong impression. I don't believe it was intentionally misleading of course, just incidentally so.
I'm also not saying this because I'm bitter myself about not having this early access content already, I already have the Druid Moss theme and the various class backgrounds. They'd have to be jaw-droppingly awesome for me to want to switch from that.

But the description for Waterdeep: Dragon Heist says:
"Pre-ordering on D&D Beyond will grant early access to adventure portraits, character frames, character sheet backdrops, and theme colors."
Waiting until the book unlocks is hardly early access.

I agree that it's very misleading. Disappointed.

Well, several of us seem to have been misled.
