Constant map updates while character creation and sheets still don't work correctly has me strongly reconsidering my subscription.

WOTC_Zac:Check out the roadmap update video that just got posted an hour or two ago! We talk a lot about our new game engine we're building, which will replace the entire backend of character creation and character sheets.

Maps is able to do a lot very quickly because we're a very modern tech stack and built very intentionally. The rest of DDB is built on tech that's nearly 20 years old and was originally repurposed to do what it's doing today.

We've been hacking hacks on top of hacks for almost 10 years, and we hit a point where even doing very simple things that might take a day or two in a modern system would take a month or two in our system.

So! That's why we've been spending the last year+ rebuilding the entire backend!

The only thing i'm unsure about is why tracked conditions icons don't show next to the token? It means I have to manually check each monster for a condition. Is there plans to have a little icon show around the main token? (Under the name perhaps)

(Bloodied/Dead Indicator) Does this work on player tokens aswell? For those designated healers who don't want to ask if people need healing every round.

 What about a toggle switch to go between them based on circumstances? (Worth noting, I don't use the VTT, this was just my first thought as I read through the comments.)

(On the non-specific nature of timelines and roadmaps)

WOTC_Zac: I absolutely appreciate your perspective. Just to be explicit - our answers are non-specific often because we either don't know (software engineering and product development is more of an art than a science!), because we're still experimenting and iterating and trying to get it right, or because it's far enough out that too many things can come up that might delay it:

Unknown unknowns, key personnel go on maternity leave or transfer to a new role, there's some urgent need and we need to reshuffle the team a little bit, etc etc.

There's so many unforeseeable things that can happen, we don't want to give you a date then miss it. So instead, we want to be transparent about what we're working on and show off what we can as early as we can to start getting feedback on it.

I know that's not as satsifying as "Here's a date." But we think it's the most honest path to take.

What I'd love to see next, and I'm willing to pay for this, is a way to add, for example, "12 commoners", and have the app apply unique tokens provided by WotC. I'd also like to be able to do this for monsters. For example, if the party goes to a goblin village, they should see lots of different looking goblins.

Completely missed that Player Journals were released. Odd that they don't have a place or even a link on the character sheet though. I guess that'll be part of the move to lift some parts of Maps out for easier use.

WOTC_Zac: Player Journals came out at the end of July, with collaborative editing available for Player Journals ready shortly.

The Maps team and the Character Tools team each have their own roadmaps and their own priorities. We try to make sure they're aligned as often as possible, but sometimes one team gets to something faster than another.

Rather than holding back the whole feature until it's ready everywhere, or not building it at all because they had other priorities, we decided to go ahead and launch it where we could now, and on other platforms when we can!

WOTC_Zac: Hi! I am not involved in this particular survey, but as a Product Manager I do a lot of user research. Both qualitative and quantitative feedback is important for guiding what we do.

The stories that come from open-ended questions are critical to getting the soul of something right (whether it's software or a new subclass), but also the bar-chart of how many people think X vs Y is important in making sure we understand something at a larger community level.

I'll add that the Community team absolutely shared lots of direct quotes from the open ended text boxes after previous surveys! So don't worry - we're hearing all of it. :)

Disappointing to see that there's nothing on here to better flesh out homebrew features and customizability.

WOTC_Zac: u/WOTC_BrianPerry talks about this in his interview on NerdImmersion that came out today.

TL;DW: New and (drastically) improved homebrew tools are gated behind our new game engine.

GrandPyromania: It's largely because we're reliant on the game platform to be done, and that's a herculean effort. It's not so much that we're intentionally ignoring it - there's a lot of work we have to do before we can start working on it.

What about homebrew? It still lacking basic features. Creation of items is limited. You can`t make weapons, classes, etc. You can`t make pets and stuff be included in subclass.

LaTiaJacquise: We've talked about this in previous updates, but updates to homebrew are one of the things locked behind the game platform rebuild. We know it's one of the most important things the community wants to see worked on once that's finished.

Question regarding Search. Will the improvement to Search on the website include the ability to limit the search to a particular title? This ability is available in the Mobile App, and I think would be very welcome on the website as well.

One question for the search function. It mentions that you can show 5.5e, 5e, or both; will there be a way to show 5.5e and I updated 5e, but not legacy content (eg when I search Dragon seeing the updated dragons and Gem dragons from Fizban’s, but not old versions of updated monsters)?

WOTC_Adela: Yes, you will be able to leverage both a rule set and source book filters to get to the specific dragons you are looking for, so you could search for an Emerald dragon and filter specifically by Fizban's 5e.

(Regarding an error in searching) They've confirmed they're working on a new Search engine that is smarter. There might be some test in production shenanigans going on.

While you're here... There also needs to be some sort of fix for when something is in multiple sources, Especially in the basic rules. I understand it's searching through everything, and i understand why the basic rules are the first result. But especially if we own the full PHB, it's kind of pointless to have as a source in the searches.

One request. Laura spoke of a sticker that's a chest that you can put loot in for players to open and get a reveal. And "add to Party Inventory" button would be great to auto drop into the party inventory.

Regarding the group finder tool(s) u/latiajacquise , it looks like you're still leaning on Discord for online games. Discord posts aren't the most efficient way to find players/groups as it tends to scroll by quickly.

Are there plans to create a more custom experience for online groups? Something not completely dissimilar to the forum option, but a bit more easily findable and a little more custom tailored?

I had posted about the lack of a Digital Only Bundle a few weeks ago and how WotC is promoting the Local Game Store Early Release Program, yet they won't offer a Digital Only Bundle on their site to reward the players that purchase their Hard Copies of new books from their LGS (either Standard Cover or Alt Cover).
