I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of D&D. Never have been. To me, it's too basic and limited, and I don't care much for the Fantasy genre. I'm a GURPSguy, I like being able to do whatever game strikes our fancy in the same system (we play a lot of supers). But, my players wanted to play some D&D (curse you Critical Role!). So, I sprung for a Legendary Pack here on D&D Beyond and a DM Subscription, and we play D&D when we're not playing GURPS. I recently launched a D&D/SpellJammer/Star Wars game as one of my players, who was trying to run a D&D campaign had it stall due to lack of interest.
I started playing D&D back in the Red Box era of the late '70s. But, as soon as I found Star Frontiers and FASA's Star Trek I moved to those. I hadn't been exposed to Traveller until I was an adult (just one of those things). But, when I came across BattleDroids/BattleTech/MechWarrior, that was my go-to game for years, until I finally started playing GURPS and discovered I could do anything in that system. After that, other game systems just became source-books for GURPS.
So, I'll be the first to admit that I don't give D&D a fair shake.
So, what makes D&D special to you? Please help me see it in a different light.
As someone who reads mainly fantasy fiction, it lets me be a part of the stories I read. I have played other systems and had fun, but I always find myself returning to fantasy and mainly D&D. Part of this is probably based on the nostalgia of having played as a kid and being my introduction to RPGs.
