I’m loving the new Ravnica product, but I’ve got a small beef with the Loxodon stats.
For those that don’t know, the Loxodon are the “elephant-folk” of Magic the Gathering fame. They are massive beings similar in height to goliaths, but much broader. Here’s the thing. They list a Loxodon’s standard height and weight as “7-8 feet tall” and “300-400” pounds.
I’m sure the WotC staff are very health conscious, but this is ridiculous. Andre the Giant was 7.5 feet tall and weighted in at over 540 pounds. He’s suppose to be bigger than an elephant man? Preposterous. Inconceivable, I say!
Is there some game mechanic that breaks down when characters are over a certain weight? I get that a Centaur or a Minotaur has to Medium, but it seems that somebody has no sense of scale in Ravnica. A loxodon should be 400lbs at their lightest and upwards of 800lbs at a healthy weight.
It's not their fault being the biggest and the strongest. They don't even exercise!
It could be that the weight of the race is limited for a game balance reason, though I am not sure what that reason might be. Maybe they are genetically less dense than humans for their mass?
There are many things in the "physics" of D&D that don't compare to our real world though.
Maybe they didn't want to lock them out of using some items like the broom of flying that have max weight limits of 400 lbs. Or the smaller carpets of flying have limits of 200 and 400 lbs. Also, if they were the appropriate 600 lbs only someone with a strength of 21 or over could move them if they KO.
I just rolled one and my weight multiplier (according to the table on GGtR pg12) was 5, so I came in at 1,500 pounds.. not sure where they get 3-400 lbs.
Unless I have an earlier print version and this was corrected, the formula they use on page 12 is wrong, compared to the table and explanation in the PHB. It should be Base Weight+(Height Modifier*Weight Modifier), not (Base Weight+Height Modifier)*Weight Modifier. Using Human as an example, with a height mod of 11 and a weight mod of 5, a 5'7" human would weigh 165lbs if you go by the PHB. Now, if you go by the formula in GGtR, that 5'7" human would weigh 605lbs. Just a bit of difference.
