Here is how Thunderstep has been recently used in the campaign I DM...
You teleport yourself to an unoccupied space you can see within range.
Unoccupied space... Well...
4 heroes. 2 can cast the spell to bring a comrad with him. They’re about to storm the manor of one my key npc. The warlock previously “recorded” the ranger who can play the viol. Right before casting Thunderstep, the warlock casts Thaumaturgy to loudly “play” what sounds like the ranger’s tune...
At the table, a player then fire up Steve n’ Seagulls banjo version of Thunderstruck...
The 2 casters use Thunderstep and teleport above the manor (yes, within reach) where there is a luxurious garden with no roof above the said garden...
Superhero landing... now I have to deal with players who believe they are the frickin Avengers!
One time, my sorcerer and a paladin got boxed into a tunnel filled with ghouls, and the gate had shut behind us.
My sorcerer runs up to the paladin, grabs them firmly by the shoulders, and asks, "Do you trust me?"
The paladin (clearly unconfortable) says, "Um...yes?"
Then we "Thunder Step" out of there, safely beyond the gate, and pretty much kill the ghouls in the process.
Never mind the sheer pleasure of your frail caster charging headlong into a horde of creatures, the spellcaster roaring like a barbarian, only to "Thunder Step" as soon as he reaches them...and continue running because he's teleported past them.
Or a bard stealing the spell so they can do the heavy metal equivalent of a power slide.

Still... EPIC moment at the table
Note: feather fall works great
Sounds awesome.
Never underestimate the creativity of players to accomplish their goals haha
Man, do I love that spell...
