I am playing a level 5 goblin scout rogue, and have been attempting to do shenanigans, such as burglary, thievery and cons. They have been either unprofitable when successful, or downright deadly when unsuccessful.
While I suspect the DM is trying to discourage me from my nightly adventures, when I asked him about it, he assured me that he was not.
This post is not about complaining, but about finding creative ways for my rogue to earn money with his skills, whether they are legal or not.
So far I have tried to burgle a few common stores, which was unprofitable, and a magic store where I got caught due to an alarm spell, and early died.
I have also worked with our party's wizard who's spells are mostly blowing stuff up, who I bought silent image for, to try to sell ingots of copper and make them look as ingots of gold. The con was found out and we had to flee.
Do you guys have ideas or past experiences with rogue shenanigans? Can you give me some ideas for thievery, burglary, cons, and the like?
Risk vs reward. Common stores won’t have much to take but won’t be guarded and places where magic items are sold will most definitely have countermeasures. You went from too low to too high. I’d go in between to like a Noble’s home or jewelry store. Be smart about it and case the joint ahead of time using disguise self.

I would be very grateful.
Just go dungeoneering. That's almost always going to be more profitable than petty theft or a common trade.
