We all know that several classes have total weaksauce level 20 abilities. Sorcerers are one of them.
What about changing the current level 20 ability to one that allowed Sorcerers to create spell slots for level 6 and level 7 spells? The cost to do so would be high, perhaps 9 S.P. for Sixth level and 10 S.P. for Seventh level.
My view is that if Wizards get much better spell versatility and free castings of particular 1st and 2nd level spells, why can't the Sorcerer get the option to expend their resources to break the Level 5 Magic limit sometimes? It should be expensive to do so (thus the high S.P. expenditure), but it should be an option for an epic level primary caster whose very being is infused with magic.
It may not be as flashy as some other capstone abilities, but in my opinion 4 spell points every short rest is pretty significant, especially when you consider you don't have to be at 0 points to get the benefit, unlike similar features for found in other classes like the Monk or Battle Master. I think it's also pretty common to get at least 2 short rests throughout a full day of adventuring, so you're often looking at 8 extra points or more. You can get a lot of mileage out of that with the right Metamagic and spell combinations.
That said, I think it's fine if the extra sorcery points don't do much for you and you'd prefer something else, but I'd be hesitant to allow extra castings of 6th-9th level spells. Like the hard limit of concentrating on 1 spell at a time, the lack of options to cast extra high level spells is one of the key design choices that keeps spellcasters in check. It's pretty telling that there's still 0 official ways to bypass either limitation. I'd prefer literally anything else.
I can understand why the devs don't want players to have extra castings of Clone or Wish, but is Delayed Blast Fireball cast at its usual level or Otiluke's Freezing Sphere really that OP? To get 2 additional castings of any 6th or 7th level spell by this proposed change would still necessitate eating up a lot of the Sorcerer's S.P. resources, even at 20th level.
Maybe an example of how 6th or 7th level spells would too powerful when cast more than the once or twice per long rest currently allowed would demonstrate your argument better.

It is hard to argue that the sorcerer capstone is worthwhile when you can get it at level 5 by multiclassing.
