If you read and watch videos on historically accuracy of the greatsword you would know that greatsword had blades as long as 5 feet and even 6 for above average height and strong warriors. Which makes it match up with poleaxes, polearms, halberds, and glaives so factually a greatsword is in fact meant to be used in the same way. Your not supposed to simply swing it around like is a longsword which most greatsword depicted in games and movies are actually more like a longsword. So tell me your thoughts on the idea?
For balancing purposes, no, Greatswords don't work with Polearm Master, and flavorwise, also no, as hitting someone in the head with the hilt of a greatsword is much harder than the end of a polearm.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I see no problem in reflavouring a glaive or similar to be a Bidenhänder. Striking enemies with the hilt of a sword is easy to imagine, and given that some of these swords were more than 6 feet long, the reach property is appropriate.
Wikipedia even states that the fighting style was closer to Polearms than Swords.
