I play in person exclusively - but I still occasionally use a VTT (in the past it has been MapTool, but I'm not opposed to trying out others).
If I have the time to digitally paint my own maps and write out a full-length campaign, I'll rig it all up so that I have the DM view on a monitor facing me and the player view on a monitor facing the rest of the table - like a DM screen but taking up a bit more table space - and run the game just like if I were drawing out the maps on my vinyl battle mat.
In the future, I intend to hybridize those two processes, replacing the vinyl mat and markers with an in-table screen for all my maps (whether painted out in advance or hastily drawn digitally) with real miniatures rather than tokens.
Never was able to play in person really, and had trouble finding games online through roll20 (I joined about 6 different games, the longest of which went 2 sessions, in every case the DM just seemingly disappeared without communication). I eventually decided to post as a DM on roll20 and have been playing there, as a DM with a group I luckily found. I intentionally ran a group of 6 so if someone dropped we would still be able to play, and also be able to handle absences from time to time.
I have only ever played in person, but i love the idea of a virtual tabletop. I'm looking into VTT for me personally as my game group is busy and it is harder to get RPG sessions in.
I am running a campaign as DM in Fantasy Grounds, also I am a player in two different campaigns. Generally, I prefer to play in person rather than playin online. And above all I prefer to be a DM!
I have used Roll20 in the past but currently I am trying to setup a campaign group with local people at our local game store. I really like the idea of supporting local businesses.
Which way(s) do you play?

I prefer to play in person but it seems harder to get a game in that way so Roll20 is where I do most of my playing.
I used to love to play in person but now if I play it has to be online, so I use Fantasy Grounds

How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
