Specter attack clarification

When the specter hits you it has life drain 3d6 Necrotic damage. Target makes a CON saving throw. Question is do you take the damage regardless and if you fail the save it reduces your HP maximum that much until a long rest? Thanks

You take the damage regardless. 

The save is for the secondary effect.
