I haven't played D&D online and just recently registered to dnd beyond, so I have some basic questions...
Do I have to purchase an adventure to play it (not as a DM)? For example; if I create a character, will I be able to play the new Frostmaiden adventure or will I have to purchase the book?
If I don't intend on being a DM, what (if any) is essential on this site to purchase? I have a good pc, webcam, and a decent mic. What else will I need? I've read through the new player guide here, but it didn't really answer everything...
What is the best way to go about joining a group if you have no friends that play? These forums?
With my schedule, I would likely only be able to play after 8PM ET for up to 3-4 hours. Is that a reasonable availability or will it be unlikely for me to find a group to play those hours?
I know these are some basic questions, but they are pretty much my biggest ones right now. Any help will be much appreciated!
If you play here in a Play by Post (check that forum) game, you don't have to buy anything. It is the GMs responsibility to provide the material you need in order to play.
If you're looking for live play, then you have to ask around in the Looking for Players forum. In that case, you will probably need some of your own resources but would depend on the the GM.

Only the DM who is running the adventure needs to purchase or have access to it. As a player all you need are the basic rules, a character and dice - either physical or electronic. With that you are ready to find a game and a DM. Forums are a good place to start, or check with your local game store. I'm told some areas are again hosting on site games with participants required to wear masks. A good resource for learning the game is here:https://www.dndbeyond.com/essentials or you may enjoy watching some of the various podcasts.
Roll20.net if you want to play online. You can purchase adventures that can be played from the website. You can also purchase adventures from www.dmsguild.com, there are even solo adventures on there that you can use on roll20.net.
You don't actually use this website to play on....yet. Hopefully someday. However this is absolutely the best character creation website. But that can be done on other websites too.
you can find groups here or on Roll20.net. There are other Virtual Table Top (VTT) websites as well like fantasy grounds but I haven't tried that yet.

As a player you (ideally) should know all the rules pertaining to your character.
The basic rules are free for everyone.
