One thing that I really don't like is subclasses, in particular magical subclasses, whose benefits at a given level could be just as easily represented by a spell. If it were possible to write a spell that could provide the same bonus as the level benefit, I think that's a bad thing.
To that end, I think it would be interesting to create a list of things which would make interesting level benefits for subclasses.
The ability to be able to cast certain spells and have the target save at a disadvantage. For example, "all charms cast must be saved against at a disadvantage" or "all fire spells cast must be saved against at a disadvantage".
The ability to cast certain spells a level earlier. For example, "Misty Step, Dimension Door, and Teleport can be cast as if they were a level lower than listed."
The ability for the first casting of a specific spell to not require concentration (spell duration still applies, though), resets on long rest.
etc.
