Hello all! I'm working on a campaign with a Warlock that took pact of the tome and wants to some how make his dagger sentient. "He's claiming for role play reasons, but I'm also super interested to see what he wants to do with it.
My question: What are some good lore books that I could place around for him to read either during rests or down time? and how long should it take for him to achieve his goal? and if anyone has some limitations from doing something like this before would be helpful too!
It would depend on what the end goal of the player is and their expectations for the sentient blade.
If they just want to have a dagger that has some minor fiend or spirit bound to it that can communicate but is otherwise worthless mechanically, then craft some cute "binding ritual" and let them have at it.
If, however, the player has higher expectations for the weapon, like somehow giving it its own attacks, or maybe trying to see if it can be gifted to an unsuspecting npc so it can try to take over their body or something like sentient weapons can sometimes do.....then I would put a lot more thought into this and craft a much harder process to achieve the end-goal. Maybe a meaningful sacrifice is in order.
Also, how much do you, as the DM want to actually play the personality of the sentient weapon? Because that's something you are signing up for when you introduce this sort of thing to your game.

I'm gonna have to ask him to be more specific the next time I talk to him, but these give me an idea of the extremes. I'm gonna guess it's going to be something in the middle. I'm expecting like a dagger with a clairvoyance element to help him find things. He knows his perception wont get much better if he sticks with trying to be a support. And again I'm not really sure what else he will try to enchant.
