I recently watched Suicide Squad and it inspired me to create a character based on Diablo. I'm pretty new to DnD, having only played 1 character so far. My initial idea for a Diablo inspired character was a Fire Gensai, but I then switched to a Tiefling Warlock. Maybe some kind of fireball spell caster would be better? Any suggestions on how to build a Diablo inspired character?
Warlock doesn't have enough Fire for the theme. Sorcs and Wizards are the better fire-throwers out there. Wizards is suggested more because their ability to fireball and still keep the party safe is very advantageous. Their capstone ability lets you fireball once for free every short rest and it's always prepped - so that's good, but are you going to make it to 20th level? However, the Sorcs fit the "type" better and can be more flexible round-by-round with their various metamagic, and burning their lower slots for higher slots can let them cast more upcasted fireballs. Unlike wizards they get the amazeballs Fire Storm spell. And they can subtle-spell a Meteor Swarm.
Sorcerer fits the mechanical play as a fire caster and nature of magic, while wizard is less fitting but offers safer party-play with the AoE fire.
Warlock - Fiend, is a good choice by "origin" (seemingly - it is not known in the movie how Diablo got his powers, he just thinks they're from the Devil, and in the comics - they're not, he's actually possessed by a Spirit of Vengeance). However, if the theme you like is "person who summons and controls fire" - you'll be disappointed. Warlocks are terrible at this. They have less cantrips, less spells, less features, less options and less resources for it. In fact of all the spellcasters of the game, they are the absolute least "fiery". I would strongly urge you to avoid at all costs if "fire" is the point.
A tiefling or Fire Genasi Dragon Sorc would be the best option, IMO. Fire resistance, innate fire magic, lots of fire cantrips and higher spells, flexibility with metamagic, more higher-level slots using sorc points, extra damage when you deal fire, flight, and the ability to frighten your enemies with your power. And the style of magic is fitting to the character.
There are more options un Unearthed Arcana and of course there's homebrew. But DMs are more likely to deny these.

This might be a bit late but grab a copy of Planeshift: Kaladesh (D&D/Magic the Gathering crossover), there is a Sorcerer Origin for Pyromancer, it should be on page 9.

Evocation Wizard
Focus on fire.
