Technically the item still works, you just can’t activate it. An animated shield remains animated when placed under a Silence effect, for instance. But activating an item with a command word or something similar is not possible while Silenced.

Many items require a command word to activate. If the user is in the area of a silence spell (or similar) would the item still work?

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
