I have the physical copies of all the books but am now starting to look at buying some of the resources on DnD beyond to supplement and make it easier to build encounters etc.
However a look through the monsters who's stats I can find that are listed as being part of the basic rules shows a large number of monsters who are in the Monster Manual already available for free. (Aboleth, Medusa, all the dragons etc)
If I purchase the Monster Manual monsters on DnD beyond am I just paying for the monsters that are not included in the basic rules or am I paying for all the ones I can already access?
Go to the Monster Manual book and scroll down to Individual Purchase Options. You'll get everything listed there. If you already have it - it will say so. Since Basic Rules and SRD content is free - I believe they don't show up in the purchase list.

ahhhh my mistake I was looking specifically at the monsters listed in the encounter list and going from my physical copy. Yes the list of monsters is less and actually the price for buying them all is proportional. Similair for the magic items in the DMG :).
You can summon the images for any monster in the forums with a tooltip. Use [ monimg] (whatever) [ /monimg]
huh, nice tip.
OP, i'd suggest waiting until there's another sale TBH....but yeah, of all the online stuff, I've found access to the monsters to be the most helpful as a DM.

Do you get the images for monsters if you only have access to Basic Rules?

A fool pulls the leaves. A brute chops the trunk. A sage digs the roots.
