This creature is based on an idea I had for a Phantom Steed which I never got to use in-game, but thought it'd make for an interesting creature. Picture it as a zebra, except that its patterns resemble a lower-resolution black-and-white photocopy of its surroundings ;)
Avoidance. If the xebrox is subjected to an effect that allows it to make a saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if it fails.
Herd of Confusion. Attacks against the xebrox are made with disadvantage whenever it is within 5 feet of another xebrox that does not have its Color Mode activated.
Actions
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack:+5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
Color Mode. The xebrox activates a full-color effect on its patterning, giving it advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and causing all attacks against it to be made with disadvantage. This effect lasts for 1 minute or until the xebrox is incapacitated or uses its action to end the effect, and cannot be used again until it has completed a short or long rest.
Description
The xebrox is descended from zebras that had accidentally entered the Feywild. Touched by the magic of their new environment, and shaped by life in a region of ever-changing terrain, these creatures are still black & white, but their patterning automatically shifts to resemble their surroundings more closely.
Young xebroxes are born with activated Color Mode, making them better able to hide from predators so long as they are awake. This fades within a few months as a xebrox reaches maturity, after which it can only be reactivated for very short periods of time to help a lone xebrox survive long enough to find the way back to its herd.
I based the stat block on a cross between the Riding Horse and Warhorse but with some ability score adjustments, proficiencies and obvious extras. I still need to recalculate the Challenge Rating.
