"They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mold them and in the furnace of war I shall forge them. They shall be of iron will and steely sinew. In great armor I shall clad them and with the mightiest weapons shall they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight them. They shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines...and they shall know no fear." Emperor of mankind.
Warhammer 40k has developed a bit of a cult following. The setting is a romantic and dark far future where there is no time for peace, there is only time for war. Big and over the top there has been a question on of how to make a space marine in DnD. Space marines are superhuman warriors in the service of humanity. Most space marines builds focus on starting the game as full fledged marines. What I choose to go with is to follow how the lore depicts their training. My method is to fallow the codex, fallowed by breaking the 20 levels in 5 groups of 4 level block. So, I hope you enjoy
The first step in becoming a space marine is the 10th company, the scout company. The space marine scouts are the infiltration, recon and raid force. To make a scout marine I recommend with one of the thief classes: Rogue, Ranger or Bard. The reason for the scout company as the first step is it demands a more strategic mind set. Choosing rogue for a highly flexible skirmisher. Ranger for a more support build. Bards are a more castor build. I recommend taking the Sharpshooter feat.
Second step is the 9th company, the far reaching devastator company. The devastators are range combat and heavy weapon specialists. To make a devastator marine I recommend a castor class: wizard, artificer, or druid. I personally prefer the artificer because the armor subclass for the guardian armor, which fits the space marine power armor. I also recommend ASI for better casting.
Third step is the 8th company, the high flying assault company. The assault marines specialize in shock assaults. The idea being that it's very difficult to fight back against a 7 foot tall screaming mad man in power armor. Here there is one of two choices: monk or barbarian. Monk for the speed and ki points allow for a more dynamic play style. Barbarian allows for a more tanky play style.
The last and final step is the 7th company, the tactical reserve company. The graduation of space marine training is to the tactical companies. Tactical marines are the backbone of their chapters. Finally the marine can go toe to toe with the best of them, out fight the blood thirstiest and out sneak the sneakiest. Here I recommend the fighter class. I prefer the battle master sub class, because the maneuvers lend well to the tactical nature of the tactical marines.
The last 4 levels are to be spent however you wish. Depending on how you spent the last for blocks you push the caster angle and become a librarian or tech marine, thief angle to become a stern guard veteran, assault angle to become a vanguard veteran, and tactical angle to become a captain.
This is my thoughts on making space marine. The goal is to create the flexibility and adaptability of a space marine. I hope you are to take my suggestions and bring about the space marine of your dreams.
First legion Dark Angels, are the prototype legion in Warhammer 40k. In the lore, the Dark Angels start off with a basic idea how to conduct warfare, but slowly writing the book how genetically enhance super heavy infantry goes to war. Since they were experimenting they collected a vast collection of methods of war becoming an unfocused legion. After reuniting with their Primarch their method became a focus and flexible style highlighted with the use of exotic weapons.
Description
For you choice of race I recommend variant human, but Asimar, Goliath, and bug bear are also good choices. Back grounds could be chosen from knights or inheritor. Knight because of flavor and inheritor because of their use of rare weapons.
Classes
Block one levels 1-4
The top ability score I am choosing is Charisma. So, I would recommend starting with bard. Bard because it fits the flavor of being a jack of all trades. At level 3, we be taking valor college. If we choose variant human with the sharpshooter feet at level 4 I recommend taking crossbow expert, because this is what I consider to be a basic scout marine.
Block 2 levels 5-9
For choosing what should be the dedicated castor classes, the choice has to a charisma castor. So I recommend sorcerer. Sorcerer origin I recommend is aberrant mind. Meta magic would be careful spell and subtle spell. with the war castor feat.
Block 3 levels 10- 14
zealot barbarian with the tough feat.
Block 4 levels 15 -16
Paladin oath of the watchers. Paladin is a good stopping point for a flexible front liner.
