I never divide EXP and coins among players. Instead I just give them the original EXP or coin amount. I do this because 1.) I´m lazy and I don't want to do the math, 2.) I want players to feel rewarded and be able to explore their character's possibilities. I want to know if anyone else does the same, or am I just too nice?
You're far too generous. Have you considered using milestone leveling instead? If you don't know, that's where you don't track (E)XP at all and instead have the PCs level up when they hit an important milestone of some sort.
As for the gold, tell them how much they find and let them divide it.
Milestone leveling has been one of the greatest boons to my games. I started using it in 3.5 when my players started to focus more on getting the next thing for their class rather than the story. I saw them fighting everything that looked at them sideways, and the idea of parlay was foreign to them. The moment I took the xp out of the game there was a huge paradigm shift. Players stopped looking for the next bit of xp and started to see that there was a world outside of their dice and sheets.
Loot, that is never a DM's job to dole out, you simply say: "Here's a thing, congrats." and move on. The party should be able to figure out how to handle all that stuff, if not, they'll learn.
Yes, I agree with the milestones. It is the only way I run my tables. Mainly so my characters don't become murder hobos trying to get as much XP as possible. Of course there are other reasons too.
But I've found that Gold hardly matters. You get to a point where everyone has more than enough for whatever they want anyways, so do whatever IMO!

I agree with Matthias, Milestone leveling should work better for you. And yeah, let them divide up gold and loot.
Okay. I have never tried milestone leveling, so I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice!
