You touch an object or a surface that contains text, such as a book or a wall. You instantly copy the contents into a book that is within 10ft of the original text. The size of any writing and images adjust to fit the pages. If you don’t have enough empty pages to reasonably fit the contents, the text becomes unreadable due to its tiny size. You can choose which parts you wish to copy or leave out.
If you make a copy of a spellbook, you need to provide 10 gp for each level of the copied spells, which the spell consumes. The spellbook you copy doesn’t need to be your own, but copying unknown spells in this way does not make you learn the spells.
I want to say this should be a lower level, with a possible requirement to upcast for copying a spellbook (maybe it requires the level of the highest spell?), but I have a hard time finding an existing spell to use as a benchmark for this effect. Without the spellbook option, I might make it first or second, since it's a bit niche. Perhaps put it on the artificer list too, since it's a lot like a photocopier?

Yeah the spell level is a tricky one. You are right that just copying a book does seem like a lower level spell.
Why did I make it level 4?
1) Because of the Spellbook effect, which is the spell's intented core purpose. I dislike the wizard fear of losing the spellbook and I also dislike spending precious campaign time (mine and everyone else's) to copy spells that I already know just to make a backup. It just doesn't fit the general pace of any of the campaigns that I've played in. I feel like at later levels it should be just spell and a bit of gold that does the trick.
2) Because of the "absolute" effect of the spell. I feel like a level 1 or 2 spell should have more limitations. This spell can be a game-breaker at low levels, since you can just copy large amounts of important lore/clues etc with a tap. Such "absolute" utility spell effects only come into play at around level 3 minimum (like Tiny Hut). At level 7 there are already vast ranges of spells that allow players to just skip certain tricky phases of a campaign.
But you are right. Having a different version for maybe level 2 might be a good idea.
Maybe I could make a different spell, called Bardacran's Simple Copy for level 2, which is the utility spell extravaganza of spell levels.
Maybe limit the amount of words per minute or the amount of words that can be copied with a single casting. Also, no spellbooks.
The casting time is an action, which means it can be done quickly in combat time. However, it doesn’t specify how long it takes to actually copy the text. In the official rules, copying a spell into a wizard’s spellbook takes 2 hours per level of the spell if I'm correct ?
So maybe taking that in consideration could balance the power of the spell.
Maybe you could do a low level spell with a higher level option that permit copying spell book ?
Thanks for the feedback. This has been taken into consideration. :)
The copying happens instantly. You still need to provide the gold for the copy.
Note that it says:
"The spellbook you copy doesn’t need to be your own, but copying unknown spells in this way does not make you learn the spells. "
So two options here
1. If you provide the gold, you can make a backup of your own spellbook instantly. It think it matches the spell level quite well. I created this spell, because I think manually writing backups of your spellbooks at level 7 is a waste of campaign time and such Master level wizards should have a spell for such simple but tedious tasks.
2. You can make a copy of a scroll or spellbook that you find or borrow. But you can't use this spell to actually learn the spells. You have to do that manually like usual. And you still have to provide that 10gp per spell level just to make a the copy. So you have to pay twice. First to copy the borrowed spellbook and then you make the 50gp per spell level to actually learn them.

I added the word "instantly" for clarification. Cheers mate. :)
