I have been working on a new class called the monstrologist. Its a half caster, but unlike the paladin or ranger, this class gets a Monster Companion that fights along side them. The problem is that I'm torn between giving the companion a static stat block, or allow the player to customize the companion. Somethings that would be the same is that the companion and player will share hit points, and that the player can cast spells through their companion, otherwise I have been stuck rewriting this feature again and again.
I think it would probably be better for balance if the stat block was static, but to make it feel better for players you could give them a variety of different companions to choose from? Kinda like the find familiar spell, but I'm assuming the companion gets to be a higher cr rating than 0 lmao. You could still give players the ability to cast spells through their companion, but they'd have to be a certain level spell (for example, if your highest spell slot available is 4 it would only be able to cast spells up to either 1st or 2nd lvl).
If it is a core part of the class then it should be modified by the different subclasses of the class. Maybe you have a dragonologist that get a more dragon-y companion, a botanist that gets a monster-plant companion, a chimer-ologist with a chimera-like companion, or a illithidologist with a intellect-devourer-ish companion.
Maybe make it so that there are 8 choices (I know that sounds daunting, but it gives more creativity for the players; plus, you could make the choices subclasses) each corresponding to a different school of magic sort of like the Wizard. You would be able to cast that type of spell through your companion, and your companion would gain features based on the subclass, like the Abjuration subclass would get a high defense companion with intercepting moves and stuff like that.
Hello!

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated

Definitely agree with Agilemind.
