I really love devils. They are super cool in terms of their powers and appearance! I wanted to make a devil race and wanted suggestions. I also wanted sub races for each variety of devil. For example ice devil barbed devil maybe even a weakened pit fiend if that were possible. I would love pit fiends but Cr 20 is a teeny tiny issue. But I would really like suggestions! Thanks in advance!
If you didn't want to do all the extra work, you can just do a tiefling with one of the subrace variants that aligns with the devil that you're want to play. If your wanting to make a full devil race rather than a tiefling I would actually use the the tiefling as a base then compare it to the devils which you can then have set as the subraces. Though that's how I would go about.
I agree... just customizing the Tiefling race would probably be the best way to work around that.
For Example, if you want to do an Ice Devil variant Tiefling you could simply replace their Fire Resistance for Cold Resistance, and replace the spells in Infernal Legacy with more thematically appropriate spells... The default gives the player access to one cantrip, one first level spell, and one second level spell, so just pick out cold themed spells at those levels that you want and customize them that way.
For a Barbed Devil you could drop Infernal Legacy entirely and replace it with natural spikes that deal additional damage with unarmed strike, and maybe like BattleRager armor it deals additional damage when grappling an opponent.
I guess but I feel like making each devil with care and making each one have their own unique abilities and mechanics. I don’t want to use a base for this one. I’m willing to put in extra work.
Sorry, I didn't quite understand what you were trying to do. If you are trying to make only one homebrew, I still would start with the tiefling as a base from because I'm a firm believer that all devils have a +1 Cha stat (then give +2 or a 1/1 split for the subraces), darkvision, infernal/common languages... then the subrace is where you have implement the specific devil flavor with the resistances, proficiencies, magic, and/or racial abilities.
Like using the base I suggested, I succubus would have the subrace features of total of +1 cha, and +1 int. Proficiency with persuasion, deception, and learn one common language of the player's choice. For spells you could use the Tiefling's "Devil's Tongue" feature (cause that's already good start for a succubus) then you can tweak that to fit the other subraces.
If you did want to do each devil as a player race, then you could add additional features without having to worry about making a base subrace without having to worry about if it still worked with the base race abilities. Though that's you call man, we're willing to help, I just wasn't quiet sure how much work you wanted to do.
One thing that you can use to help you out is detect balance, I've only been recently using it. But it is a good start to help find out if your race is too strong or too weak, and I quickly found out that my races tend to be on the stronger side by using this.
