Hello, first time posting here so thanks in advance.
I have a question on using the Create Monster tool in the Homebrew Creations section. I’ve noticed while creating new monsters from existing templates that there’s usually a tag for items, say, for example, fireball. I’m guessing this references the content for that item so that you can quickly look at it during gameplay.
My question is can this tag be applied to other items, for example, I wanted to add a Staff of Charming to my Mage along with a Ring of Protection. I assumed I’d be able to simply enter: [Tooltip Not Found] and the same for the ring of protection but it didn’t work.
As a secondary question, what strategies does everyone here employ when modifying an existing monster? There are many times where I want to beef up a monster but not necessarily change it entirely. Say a bandit that I want to be slightly above the common rank and file. How do you change the values for STR, DEX, etc. without simply adding a number randomly. I guess what I’m asking is how do you do it in a fair way that makes sense.
To answer your second question, I would keep in mind a CR you’re trying to hit. Consult the Monster Statistics by CR table in the DMG section Creating a Monster for AC, hit point maximum, damage per round, and attack modifier. Then give the monster the proficiency bonus listed, increase the number of hit dice, and maybe give a multiattack or give more attacks. Maybe armor the monster a little bit better.
If the proficiency bonus does not increase the attack bonus to the appropriate amount, start increasing the main attack modifier. Then raise other modifiers such as wisdom, constitution, and dexterity (these three are often the targets of spells) by 1/2 or 1/3 as much as the main stat.
And when all else fails, start adding special traits.
