I've been digging through some of the subclass aides in the forums that deal with adding spellcasting to a martial class. I've gotten it to the point where when choosing the subclass I can pick spells that can be added, but the character sheet doesn't add spell attack or spell save DC. I've made sure to include "Can cast spells" and the spell casting ability. Are there more resources or tutorials focused on tweaking spellcasting as part of a subclass?
I don't know how to fix it, but you could try creating a copy of the arcane trickster subclass for rogue, to back-engineer the implementation of a subclass giving spellcasting.
Arcane Trickster is actually what I'm trying to create. When I create a character or a subclass, the only option is Thief. I own all the core books, but I didn't buy them from DnD Beyond. I don't what to buy something again that I already own. Since it's only for me and I don't plan on sharing it to the community, I'm using the homebrew creator to copy and past from the handbook.
Well, the lazy advice I could give would be to spend the 2$ to buy just the arcane trickster archetype ;)
Anyway, I believe you simply need to do the following:
- On the "basic information" tab, you should select a spellcasting ability, select "Yes" to can cast spells, leave the spell list blank, spell prepare type blank, and select "No" to know all spells.
- On additional Specific spells, you should select all the spells the Arcane Trickster has access to.
- Finally you should create a class feature named Spellcasting, that should be available at lv3. I believe the website is looking for this feature's name to grant spellcasting to a character. I assume this is required in case you would want to create a subclass that has access to spell, but not as soon as you enter it. This feature does not require you to configure anything in it, simply to exist.
I am not sure how dndbeyond configures your spell slots based on this information, but I believe it should work, based on the minimal working example I was able to create.
Maybe you can make some kind of martial casting class, kind of like a paladin with a weapon as a focus. At higher levels, make them able to attack with the focus only and cast a spell as a bonus action.

Good luck, and tell us if it worked.

You, sir, are brilliant. Doing it that way, I now have everything I want in the subclass. Thank you so much! And you saved me 2 whole dollars!
