My son (10) is playing a Gnome Ranger and he has been interested in a companion, He likes the ideas of homebrews and I decided to start working on something.
A Chihuahua Red Belly Piranha Hybrid.
Basically a Chihuahuas size, legs & ears and A Piranhas Belly, Teeth, Beaty eyes, Fin & Tail.
Not sure on stats but I was thinking
17 Hp
14 Ac
We've both agreed on the name Ankle Biter as the race or breed? Not sure on that one lol.
I can't draw to save my life but I've been trying and coming up with somewhat neat concepts, any thoughts or recommendations.
I was thinking Toothy Grip would be his attack and it would basically be a frantic bite which if a hit took a chunk of flesh the size of a half dollar. (My son's idea)
He's starting to get into it and he wanted to play so I decided let's finally do it and bought both starter sets and now we're planning out and doing a Homebrew. My brother in law and myself are also learning about a month and 30 hours logged already
Not sure what level you are starting out but 17 hp may be a bit high, as a gnome ranger is he starting out with the beast master archetype or is this a free companion for him?
The (Quipper is a piranha so it would be worth using its blood frenzy special for the toothy grip, maybe make it amphibious to reflect the chihuahua side (have to confess I red chihuahua as cthulhu first and thought about the island of dr moreau after reading the post through). I can't find a dog stat block so maybe mix quipper with the (Mastiff
given you are just starting out, as a DM, I'd be happy to to just add both stat blocks together to give the following:
Blood Frenzy. The Ankle Biter has advantage on melee attack rolls against any creature that doesn't have all its hit points.
Amphibious. The Ankle Biter can breathe air and water underwater.
Keen Hearing and Smell. The mastiff has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Actions
Bite.Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Then if it is a Ranger animal companion just add the class bonuses, as a side note, given you son is playing a gnome, it could also double as a mount.
Well it is honestly just going to be a free companion for him/The group pet, He did choose the beastmaster roll but wants to have a panther as his main companion/Mount, He has decided either that or a hybrid beast of some sort.
We've just wrapped up both starter sets myself running Dm and my brother in law and son as the main party with a Permanent NPC that sometimes is able to break a couple rules but all in all they just want to add a bit of new chemistry to the party.
Thanks for the stat set up I think I'm going to see if it's something he likes, If I can make a decent picture of it drawn I'll definitely post it.
