How to have a homebrew subclass give someone expertise in a skill if they're already proficient? I don't mean choosing expertise, but just something they automatically get, like getting expertise in Nature if they're proficient in it
Assuming the feature reads something like, "you gain prof in X. If you're already prof in X then you gain expertise instead." I'm currently unaware of a way to you can make it function perfectly, but a safe way is to just give them the proficiency in the thing then if the player is already proficient then they can manually make it expertise on their character page/sheet. I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but it's probably the cleanest way without doing some crazy things that makes it look clunky (making it a choice feature where one is just proficiency and the other being an expertise choice).
