Game: D&D 5e Group Type: Online (D&D Beyond, Roll20, and Discord) My Experience: I've been playing and DMing for over 40 years. (And I still suck at it.) Your Experience: Any experience level is welcome as long as you're willing to learn. Schedule: Friday or Saturday evenings from 7 pm Eastern until at least 11 pm; our goal is to play three weekends per month. Roles sought: 3-4 additional players Game style: Two or three introductory sessions to work out the kinks and get everyone to level 3, followed by much slower advancement and focused role-playing. (<50% combat and >50% role-playing, problem-solving, etc.)
A grognard is an old soldier; in gamer-speak it's apparently someone who prefers to play older games. (So sayeth Google.) But forget that second part; we play 5e just like the youngsters. I'm 53 years old and my friend who will be joining as a player is 48. We both started table-top gaming around age 10-12, or 35-40 years ago. We have careers, kids, mortgages, and all the other adulting accessories, so we absolutely understand the need to prioritize real life...but we do like to get away from it all for a few hours a week.
Incidentally, this will be a "leave it at the door" campaign, meaning no real-life politics. Let's indulge in a little escapism, shall we?
The setting is homebrew, initially (or completely) focused on a frontier region. The law is whatever the local robber baron says it is and you can only keep what you're strong enough to hold. That may well be your own barony someday. The frontier forms the boundary between a long-settled region that was home to the original seven tribes of your people and a vast wilderness full of things that mothers use to frighten misbehaving children. A multi-generational war against a nearby theocratic empire forms the backdrop for our setting, although the war itself is relatively far away.
First trigger warning: The theocratic empire not only believes that it's their divinely-ordained destiny to rule the entire world, but also that it's their pious privilege to enslave non-believers. I anticipate assembling a group of PCs who'll be heroes and won't tolerate slavery...but you could surprise me. We will not be playing on the dark side unless everyone agrees that it's okay and promises to be tasteful about it, however.
Second trigger warning: I cuss like a sailor and make off-color jokes like one, too. Under 18 (30?) probably shouldn't ask to join. Your parents would not approve.
Your adventures in this unfriendly world could include undoing (or reinforcing) the evil done by a local robber baron, working to eliminate a slaving ring in order to free your people (or just to eliminate the competition), venturing into the wilds to prove you're tough enough to survive there, or proving that you're really tough by venturing into civilized lands and playing the intrigue game. Fair warning - the nobility have lots of privileges and you don't, meaning that they have every advantage in most localities and legal systems.
If you're interested in learning more, then send me a message and we'll find a time to connect. Thanks for reading!
Another Grognard (and former sailor) here. Saturday evenings would be great. I'm 57 and have been playing since the 80s. Your game sounds like one I would love to be a part of. I hope we can talk soon.
Hello there fellow DM! I'm very curious about your game, and I'd love to join your campaign if its on friday :) I'm fine with everything you've written down, and read the introduction page thorouhgly! Hope you give me a chance to introduce myself as well!
