Is it possible to use a Firearm as a monk weapon? Originally I thought it was possible to use it by playing a Kensei or using the new Dedicated Weapon feature (if you could pick up proficiency); however, recent review of these abilities reveals that they each require the weapon of choice to be either a simple or martial weapon.
I guess the main question of this thread is "are firearms their own class of weapons, separate from simple or martial?"

The Firearms section in the DMG would suggest they are something special. Suggesting using the Training rules in the downtime section of the PHB to learn how to use one.
So does the fact that the only way to get it outside of perhaps DM Fiat for the Artificer is training, feat, or class feature based upon what is printed in the books currently.
though as a benefit it seems like having proficiency in one is having proficiency in them all.
Edit: I actually found an answer that partially supersedes part of my response thanks to one of the people in my group.
A thing to note in the DMG is that they are actually listed as Martial weapons.
You'll notice where they are individually listed out with their properties that under each era section that some have been designed for they are listed as "Martial Ranged Weapon" at the top of each era's individual weapons details list.
It's Chapter 9, Under Adventuring Options, Firearms for those that don't have the book on DDB.

Ahhh. I see. When I posed the question I had been looking at a listing of a Pistol online and there it was listed as a "Firearm Ranged Weapon," so I suspected it might have a special class. But you are right, in the DMG they are listed as martial weapons.
Guess that answers my question then. Time to build a Kensei monk with a pistol, a longsword, a trenchcoat, and some sick black sunglasses from the 90s!

it might be something to double check with your DM if they even have them in their game. And I'd argue because of specifics listed about them proficiency in martial weapons still doesn't just automatically give you proficiency in firearms unless the DM says so. But it sounds like you were already prepared for those complications anyway.
If I know my gun-fu (debatable), you basically never shoot further than 5ft anyway, right? I feel like you could just reflavor your unarmed attacks, lmao.

True, but by using an actual gun my monk can punch people from really far away.
