I'm new to being a monk and D&D in general and I'll be starting at Level 9. I notice slow fall is a reaction does that mean if you jump off a building during battle on your turn and would reach the ground on the same turn you can't use slow fall or could you still use it? And if so does that count as the last round's reaction (if not used) or the coming round's reaction?
It hasn't come up yet but I'm thinking of different ways to use this and want to make sure I understand the rules before I try. (Also sounds really useful if a building or cliff I'm running up is actually taller than I thought and there was no place for me to perch on my way up).
Certain special abilities, spells, and situations allow you to take a special action called a reaction. A reaction is an instant response to a trigger of some kind, which can occur on your turn or on someone else's. The opportunity attack, described later in this section, is the most common type of reaction.
When you take a reaction, you can't take another one until the start of your next turn. If the reaction interrupts another creature's turn, that creature can continue its turn right after the reaction.
I used slow fall once at a relatively low level to as part of an ambush. I stepped off of a cliff and floated down to the ground without taking any damage and I was able to attack from behind while everyone else attacked from the front. Luckily I rolled my stealth check so I wasn't attacked before the rest of the party got into position to attack them from the other side or else it would not have gone very well for me.

Here's the rules on reactions:
