Nick is sitting in a remote place in the forest looking at a picture and crying.
"Why," speaks a dry voice from the branches of a tree above you, "do you weep when others are so thirsty?"
He looks up and tucks away the picture. "Because I miss my friend..."
The scarecrow's cloth body is twisted in an unnatural position, tangled in the trees. Silently, blackbirds perch in the tree, watching you with their beady eyes. "That feeling is not far from me." The ragged creature speaks through lips sewn together with black thread. "Will you see this friend again?"
"he's dead so no, probably not."
He is silent for a moment. The only sound comes from the rustling of his birds feathers. "Every death kills the world a little. What do you miss about your friend? What died in the world when your friend died?"
"I haven't felt truly happy since he died..."
"That is awful. You can't tie up all your value and joy in a mortal. They will fail you every time." A branch snaps as the scarecrow tries to move itself, but it remains stuck fast. "I find it helps to remember those who have left us behind by what they did and who they were in life, not by the fact that they died. Don't think about him as a dead man. Think about him as someone who lived. How did he live?"

His shoulders sag a little. "Maybe I don't. I am only a bag of rags stuffed with hay and hunger after all. I don't even got a brain in my head bag." A few crows break their silence and caw. "But I think that I might. Every rag of my body is made up of the memories of a dead person. I know so many people so well, and they never met me. They never will because they are dead and gone. I feel the loss of so many, but what good would my life be if I spent every second of it mourning their deaths? My poor birds would grow hungry and I have no tears for them to drink. Instead, I remember them and try to honor and learn from their memories. I ain't perfect at it, and the sadness often whirls around me like a twister, threatening to tear me to pieces. That's how I got stuck in this here tree. Still, I try. Don't let your sadness make you forget to live your life. Surely your friend wouldn't want that?''
