"Now listen funny man, your breath stinks through two yards of oak tonight" - said by a figure wrapped in a white sheet, adorned with bells and ribbons, and with a horse skull for a head.
Lol. What’s it from?

Lol. What’s it from?
The Mari Lwyd. It's a Welsh tradition where a horse skull is stuck on a pole and wrapped in a sheet. Bells and ribbons are used to decorate it and someone gets under it and carries it around. They go from door to door and get in what is pretty much a Welsh rap battle with the people inside. If the Mari Lwyd wins it is allowed inside to be fed and to get drink.
Does anybody know of any specific ghouls (as in cannibalistic, corpse eating monsters) from mythology? I am writing a comic that draws heavily from mythology and folklore and this sort of thing would be useful. So far I have:
Psoglav - One-eyed, dog headed, horse legged, hairy, humanoids with iron teeth. They live in dark caves filled with gemstones and come out at night to dig up graves and eat corpses.
Ghuls- The original from Arabian mythology.
Qutrub - Hairy dog headed corpse eaters.
Aswang ghouls - Filipino monsters.
Balbal - the flying squirrels of the ghoul family.

Vrykolakas are flesh eating undead creatures from greek mythology.. They also knock on people’s doors, and if people answer, they die a few days later and become a vrykolakas. They can only be destroyed in their graves on Saturday, where you have to cremate them, cut off their head, or cut them to pieces.

That's really cool. Thanks.

Yeah, there are a lot of monsters that blur the lines between ghouls, werewolves, vampires, etc.
Which makes sense because when people first made that stuff up, they weren't trying to make everything fit into nice categories. They just saw a bunch of people dying and so they blamed it on dead bodies and stuff. We later came along and tried to classify these things which is fine but it isn't always going to work.
if i say something inflammatory the intention is not to trigger an emotional response and the fact that it does so is purely accidental and I sincerely apologise if it does
The last real post was only ten days ago. This place has recovered from longer periods. I believe that this thread could be immortal, or at least rise from the dead every once and a while as is so often seen in the mythology we study.
I would post more thread relevant stuff if I could but I am super busy at the moment.

That’s ok, you don’t have to post here all the time.

Koschei is kind of like a lich. He hid his soul inside an egg inside a duck inside a hare inside a chest in a tree on an island (or something similar to that) so he wouldn’t die.

Mythology question: What is your favourite mythological monster that is not from Greek Mythology?
I particularly like the Kludde and Kuchisake-onna
I am also here.
Am snek.
I like the Yule cat and Koschei the deathless. Koschei isn’t really a monster, just a sorcerer, but he’s cool.
i was also going to say the Vrykolokas, but then i remembered, “oh wait… that’s Greek.”
I Also like Ratatoskr!
Vrykolokas is interesting, he seems so unlike most things in greek myth

nuckelavee from the mythology of the Orkney isles

I think I’ve heard of that one before, they’re cool.
