it appears t be a sort of transportation system. When he approaches, a short pillar comes out of the ground and the square top splits open in half.
'Um, okay?' He inspects the pillar

whenever he comes within 5 feet, it opens, whenever he steps away, it closes and slides back down.

Flint carefully picks up the cube and puts it in the pillar
