You successfully approach them and you remain unseen.
"How much deeper do ya th--" the first man's voice is interrupted by the sound of his shovel hitting something solid. All three men freeze suddenly and as you peer into the whole along with the rest of the men you see a patch of white protruding from the dirt. One of the men bends down and carefully extracts the object from the soil, brushing it off to reveal a pale white horse skull. They stand silently and stare at it.
You hear the sound of something swoop overhead. The men don't seem to notice as whatever was flying lands in the darkness of night and begins to approach them behind their back.
She watches before looking overhead at what is flying above. She tilts her head and begins to hum a light melody. (Gonna need all of them to make a Wisdom saving throw.)
For the three men:

For the witch woman: 21
The moon's light reveals that the thing approaching the men appears to be an old woman. She is dressed in rags with a red headscarf and she grips a broom in her hands. Her face seems odd, her smile is unnatural and unnerving but the shadows make it hard to make out why. "Well done lads, you did well in digging up our queen." she speaks in a rough, high pitched voice causing the men to jump in surprise and turn around.
They are all going to take 12 Psychic Damage from the humming as it pierces their minds with a stingy harmony.
The three men scream and collapse to the ground. They suddenly go silent and still, except for one who seems to be moving a little. The witch woman cringes from the pain, but it seems to affect her less. "Hello? Whose this? Why don't you come out, don't be shy." She grabs her broom and begins to sweep the ground with long swooping motions. A cloud of dirt rises up and obscures her from view for a second before settling down. Make a Wisdom saving throw.
Edit: Oh and are you a fey, undead, celestial, or fiend?
*Fey. Archdruid.*
She makes herself visible again and tilts her head "Hello there, what are you and these men doing?" She said.
As the dust settles you find that you are thirty feet away from where you were standing.
The woman continues to smile, "We are merely planning a party. All we wish is to sing and dance. Why don't you join us?" One of the men struggles to his feet. He grabs the skull and hugs it to his chest.
She chuckles "I am not a party person." She is going to cast Thorn Whip on the man who is holding the skull. (Hit: 18 Damage: 15)
Your vine lashes on to the man who cries out in pain as the thorns slash his flesh. As he is pulled back to you, you see that his body is now limp and lifeless yet the skull is still safely wrapped in dead arms. The witch steps forward, "Now why should you deprive us of our pleasure? Hand over the skull and I will forget your murder of these men." She says with her unmoving grin, "They will too."
Oswald finally caves. He sends in three Exterminatus Engines (Hellfire Engines, but Grouper-ized) to the area and watches through arcane sensors on the machines.
He finds the edge of the forest to be more of a facade. The ground becomes oily and black, like tar mixed with dirt. Animals move around aggravated, deformed to the point t if near unrecognizable
Mr. Gouper commands the Engines to start a controlled burn. If word of this gets out, the people would blame him, and he can't have that.
Any creatures caught in the fire screech as they're burned, the forest floor taking to the burn a bit better than he had expected
Oswald has automatons hunt down any remaining mutants. The problem isn't that this should not be, it is simply that it has caused him issues, and he does not like that.
Most flee, and other larger ones that withstand the fire for longer attack the automatons, actually managing to damage a few of them, definatly an issue.
As they go deeper into the center of the forest, he comes across a maybe 60-75ft clearing, a figure sunk into the ground at the center, unresponsive to the noise around it
The machines try to grab the figure and take it to the factory. Oswald is calmly observing through the screens in said factory.

The air at the edge of town ripples for a moment before a small snapping noise rings out, a rift forming in the air, opening into a small 5-6ft portal. Out of said portal steps an Elf in odd armor. Their hair is black, contrasting to their paler complextion. Their eyes a piercing ice blue, a winter Eladrin by the seems of it. One hand holds a shortsword, writhing in arcane energy for a moment before its sheathed, the rift jn dimensions shutting behind him. Letting out a breath, he looks around, a raven that was perched on his shoulder taking off into the sky
Yuri looks over and audibly gasps "ZENIX!!!" She misty steps over and tackles him in a hug, kissing him. "My beloved soldier, how are you?"
He seems slightly taken off guard at first, before laughing as he's tackled, "Hello Yuri, I am well. How are you?" He asks after returning g the kiss
"Missed you for many suns and moons!" She chimes with a giggle. "Tell me what you have seen! I must know!!"
"I have missed you aswell." He says, his raven landing on his shoulder and cawing pleasantly at her, "I spent a good amount of time exploring the shadow fell as of late"
"Is the Raven Queen making you work again?" She giggled and tilted her head, smirking.
"Oh you know how she can be" He smiles, "Outbreak of intelligent undead, people surpassing their lifespan." He smiles, a bit of warmth in his eyes
"Indeed. Have to get rid of them less the natural order be disrupted." She said.
"Yes,but that does mean a rogue necromancer causes weeks of work without break." He sighs dramatically
She chuckles "You need to come see me more often. I do enjoy your presence very much."
"You are always what I look forward to seeing the most after an assignment" He smiles,
"Perhaps." She chuckles "I just enjoy your face is all. It makes me most pleased."
He gives her a quick squeeze before breaking the hub, stepping back and stretching for a moment, "I'll keep that in mind. Atleast for now, I'm on vacation unless something big happens that the Raven Queen couldn't handle on her own"

The figure seems to be wooden, atleast their skin is, like someone made a person out of tree bark. Their entire body is partially covered in the tar like gunk permeating the area, and in the center of their chest lies a crevice, a shallow black heart beating slowly in the cavity

He reaches into his apron and pulls out a bottle of bloodwine. His apron pocket evidently has the properties of a bag of holding. "To allies." He says, pouring two glasses and offering one to Yuri.
"To the destruction of a Monarch." She says and smiles, baring sharp teeth. She drinks it down in less than a second.
Oswald barely sips his glass. He offers her the bottle. "What do you think of tonight? Give her too much time and she could actually find a way around my weapons. Maybe she'll run and hide."

She moves closer and you realize that her head is wooden. A carved wooden head with a crooked nose, wide eyes, and an unnaturally wide smile painted on. "You cannot stop the coming of the queen. She may have been hindered during the harvest, but now it is winter and her strength has grown. She will arrive sooner or later and I will do everything in my power to make it sooner rather than later, for my patience grows thin."

Any particular type of magic on the idol?
A prevalent amount of conjuration magic seems to dwell inside the wooden form. Other than that, it lies dormant

She chuckles "I have found one to join us in our war against Tatiana. He owns a factory against the forest edge. He is an adorable thing, I feel myself drawn to him."

Oswald barely sips his glass. He offers her the bottle. "What do you think of tonight? Give her too much time and she could actually find a way around my weapons. Maybe she'll run and hide."

She abandons the glass and takes the bottle with a sly grin. She shifts herself and lies her head in his lap, chuckling. "I would hope she would simply offer herself up for slaughter but her pride seems to be the nail in the coffin." she says.

"A factory? Curious, you must particularly like this one" He says, nodding a little, "If he supports our cause, I look forward to meeting him"
The last two sink into the ground, the weight of the machine collapsing into the tar pit underneath. The first one actually manages to make it close enough to the figure to grab it before sinking, camera able to grab any details he may be interested in
He snorts. "Praise the Nameless for that. I wouldn't want all my tricks and toys to go to waste."

"He reminds me of the stone, Pyrite." She chuckles "And yes I do, interesting fellow."

Oswald watches. He pushes the intercom button. "Send in the Iron Golems."

"Indeed," She said and drank the last of the contents in the bottle with a smile "One day the world will hopefully be like that but, unfortunately, we are stuck in these times."

Zenix smiles, "A fitting stone, especially for his profession." He says, taking a moment to sniff the air, "Its certainly apparent there's a factory"
A prevalent amount of conjuration magic seems to dwell inside the wooden form. Other than that, it lies dormant
"The future will be perfect. We just need more people like us. Bastards of progress, so fed up with this garbage heap that we finally do something about it. I don't have all the answers, but the least I can do is give the next guy a boost up."
