As a point of order, “the” should be “þe” under Old and Middle English construction. This is actually where our usage of the definite article “Ye” comes from (as in “Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese). The letter Thorn (Þ), when written in script, often was given a similar appearance to a Y. This gave us words which appear to the modern viewer as Ye, but were actually written Þe. This is further confused by the fact Ye was, in fact, a real Middle English word - a type of second person plural pronoun.
