 He makes up the less important details. After all, this is for inspiration, not research.

 "I can't imagine what they'd look like in all their splendor..." Another researcher says out to no one in particular, also looking out and into the Sea of Stars. You can see he has a pen and notebook in hand, and has been writing his observations.

From some of the 'windows' on the Coex, people are crowding to look in amazement at the jellyfish bloom drifting through the astral fluid. Even Prof. Okeanus is there, simply taking in the magnificent display of bioluminescence.

Sarah (short for Sarahbelle) comes into the main room of the Codex. She’s a sea elf (well, technically an astral elf who’s been genetically modified to breathe water) and a marine biologist. This is her first expedition and she’s really excited about it. Her most striking feature are her violet eyes.

*To answer your question, space is filled with enormous oceans of water-like astral fluid, which are basically cosmos-spanning bubbles of the stuff that encompass asteroid fields, stars, and other interstellar phenomena. Most planets have a little bubble of atmosphere around them, which keeps the astral fluid from leaking in and drowning the entire planet. Most creatures can survive in both the astral fluid and regular water, and can tolerate the conditions of empty space for some time, but mostly stick to the regions of these bubble oceans that they're most comfortable in. You likely won't find a Stellar Sea Cow in the Icarus Zone around a star.*

*hello i'm here, I brought my character, and I'm ready to play.*

A tall, lean, and muscular air genasi walks into the plaza, looking as if he had just arrived at the Codex, with his belongings still on his back. He bounces back and forth on his feet, looking around in great interest and excitement. 

(More detailed description can be found on his sheet, along with just general info. Idk why I made the entire thing but this whole idea just got me so excited) 

Zyciorys is seemingly in a trance as he fills out pages and pages with sketches and theoretical procedures for... something. It's not written in any common language or in draconic or deep speech, so most of the researchers wouldn't understand them.

*Good morning, everyone!*

There is a crackle of static as the speaker systems of the Codex are powered on. After a second, the sound of Prof. Okeanus' voice can be heard throughout the Codex:

"All new recruits, or those who wish to join CSIAB, please make your way to the Food Court for onboarding."

Some people begin heading out to the aforementioned Food Court, which the signs make easy to locate.

Sarah heads for the Food Court.

Able, the air genasi, also follows the others to the Food Court.
