They were in the creature's grip, if we'd gone in the water to fight it, its tentacles would have brought the rest of us down, we couldn't have even gotten close. And I hate to be the bad guy, but it was two kids. If we'd tried to save them, then we'd be looking at a lot more dead than two kids. And, say, half the gang died in the fight, who is gonna bring in the food to feed the rest of us?'
